New York Times Reporter Miller Is in Talks Over Her Job Status
New York Times Reporter Miller Is in Talks Over Her Job Status
By JOE HAGAN
Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
October 26, 2005; Page B3

New York Times reporter Judith Miller has begun discussing her future employment options with the newspaper, including the possibility of a severance package, a lawyer familiar with the matter, said yesterday.

The discussion about her future comes several days after the public rupture of the relationship between the Times and Ms. Miller, a 28-year veteran of the paper. Both the editor and the publisher of the Times have expressed regret for their unequivocal support for Ms. Miller when she spent 85 days in jail for refusing to testify before a federal grand jury investigating the unmasking of a Central Intelligence Agency operative.

The negotiations began with a face-to-face meeting Monday morning between Ms. Miller and the publisher, Arthur Sulzberger Jr., said the lawyer familiar with the situation. A spokeswoman for the New York Times declined to comment. Ms. Miller didn't return calls.

Mr. Sulzberger and New York Times Executive Editor Bill Keller both indicated they wished they had known more about the circumstances that led Ms. Miller to go to jail rather than reveal who told her the identity of CIA agent Valerie Plame Wilson. She later agreed to testify when one of her sources, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, the chief of staff for Vice President Dick Cheney, gave her a personal waiver to do so.

45. My guess is that
her "severance package" will include another hot weekend in Aspen with "Scooter" and a George Tenet-style "Medal of Freedom" from President Satan. Not to mention the book deal, movie rights, etc., etc. Meanwhile, terrified Democratic "leadership" will do nothing at all about it, as usual.  Joe McCarthy, now shoveling coal in hell with Dick Nixon, Ron Reagan, and "Dolph" Hitler is laughing like hell, because he thinks (with good reason) he's "winning". What's more pathetic? The rabid dog or the whipped puppy?

Keller & Sulzberger could have nipped this in the bud a long time ago, when they noticed that Judith was out of step with the world. Now they come up with those phony excuses, like they don't have a brain of their own.

step with the world. They seemed to have been COMPLETELY FINE with everything she was coming up with about the fabled WMDs that we were sure to find in Iraq any minute now. They seemed to be just fine with everything else she was writing, and the way she was writing it, the language she used. I was reading something most intriguing on the Romenesco website from Jay Rosen, talking about how EVERYTHING Judith Miller writes is in "code" of some sort:

http://journalism.nyu.edu/pubzone/weblogs/pressthink/2005/10/21/jm_clrc.html

I'm not sure they did notice. She was still their fair-haired wonder-woman, the golden girl, she-who-could-do-no-wrong, with her Pulitzer Prize, her scoops, her killer sources, and her marquee value. They weren't in any hurry to look any deeper. Everything was just peachy.

I had an experience with somebody - well - I was gonna say somebody like Judy Miller in a newsroom in which I worked, years ago. But this delightful young nymph was nothing like Miller. No prizes (certainly didn't do much to earn any), no extensive experience. But she did have a few things going for her: unavoidable beauty, a good radio voice, and chutzpah. I never figured out whether she was actually sleeping with the program director or just flirting him up and flattering the bejeezus out of him because she knew it would benefit her. But she rocketed to the top of the pile, even openly threatening my job (as her immediate supervisor) and fomenting discord in my newsroom. She did everything she could to turn what few staffers and interns I had against me, and because she was the favored child of upper management, they were more inclined to ally themselves with her than with me, and certainly NOBODY wanted to rock the boat. When I tried to point out her multiple on-air blunders and the TONS of examples of her playing fast and loose with the facts to that same upper management, they simply wouldn't hear of it. Just would NOT hear of it. Even after she was written up in one of the local paper's media gossip sections for her mispronunciations and other on-air embarrassments - for which they dismissed her as a mere "sidekick-newsreader" (same column described me separately as "award-winning broadcast journalist"), the PD and the general manager were completely enamored of her, and WOULD NOT HEAR anything critical of her AT ALL. They just would not. They did everything but plug their fingers in their ears and dance around singing LA-LA-LA-LA-LA.

I suspect the same thing happened with Judy Miller and her upper (mis)management. They were just very probably enamored of her, and her self-proclaimed luster, and didn't even consider looking a little bit deeper under the surface. Probably didn't think it was even necessary.

Now, as a result of this negligence and complete idiocy, she's fallen flat on her face and yanked them down in the gutter with her.

Fine. If she hangs, they should stick with her the way they always have, and hang with her. Truly, she couldn't have done it without them. Fie on the whole lot of them.

46. Exactly: Judy's but one cancer. Happily, a 52% drop in profits...
...means the Times will soon be scaling back whether it wishes or not.

Unfortunately it's too much to expect the chief assholes to fall on their swords; the Times always has been and always will be an establishment mouthpiece. Judy merely represents a high point in the relationship between US reporters and their true employers, the plutocracy.

The best we can hope for at present is that, along with other MSM, increasing irrelevance to readers will drag these lying dinosaurs down into the tarpits. Glub glub glub!

19. Severance Package = Deal for Settlement and Silence?
It's obvious that the ownership and senior editor could/should have been more involved in vetting Judy's articles and actions.

How did she earn the sobriquet "Little Miss Run Amok" unless she was allowed to run amok? Management should have put a stop to "Loose Cannon Miller." But they didn't.

So ownership and management at the Times have a lot of 'splaining to do.

Mayhaps they want to settle to get a contract with Judy to not devluge the articles of settlement. Mayhaps one of the contractual considerations will be to not comment regarding the top of the pyramid at the Times after she's tossed her parachute and kicked out the back door of the "Grey Lady" into free-fall.

I wonder....

That's where she should have been from the start. At least we know not to believe anything from Fox.

What severance pay? Give it to the families of the dead, the soldiers or the Iraqi people whose lives were endangered by her and all the other propagandists who cheered on the lies so many of us knew they were telling.

Shame on all of them ~ we need an entirely new press, with real journalists and I hope when all the truth is out, there will be a mass exodus of the front people for this cabal in the press. Without a truthful press, there is no democracy, and these last five years have tragically demonstrated that.

Let Fox remain as an example of what could happen if we ever again drop our guard, and let Judy be their 'star reporter'. Assuming she isn't indicted, of course.

in Iraq. Thanks for your reporting, Judy.

"She has since become a subject of controversy for her prewar reporting on Iraq's nuclear capabilities, which bolstered the Bush administration's case for an invasion.

Many of those reports, which relied in part on anonymous administration officials, turned out to be incorrect. The Times has since acknowledged flaws in the reporting and published a series of articles correcting the mistakes."

50. Just when I think the NYT can't sink any lower..........
they succeed in digging themselves an even deeper hole. Talks about her future at the NYT? TALKS? :wtf: This woman should have been fired months ago and now they're having "talks discussing her future employment options".
How about, YOU'RE FIRED! That's the total extent of the talking that should be done.
Sulzberger and Keller should go with her, they've pussy-footed around this issue for too damned long and have allowed Miller to use the Times as a tool for the bush administration's warped agenda. Under Sulzberger and Keller's guidance this newspaper has become the laughing stock of the industry. Don't these clowns feel even the least bit embarrassed by the way Miller has used them and the Times? In all likelihood they themselves are part of the mighty bush propaganda wurlitzer, this is why they've treated Miller with kid gloves.
This........woman, should be fired immediately without compensation. The blood of over 2,000 soldiers is on her hands as well as the bushies. I hope she's happy, the rotten, filthy bitch. :grr:

58. I think they should retain her severance to help fund
the inevitable civil lawsuit that will come from the estates of the dead and wounded Americans that were sent off to war in Iraq on a boat load of lies all brought to you from the publication that only "prints the news fit to print".

59. GOOD! Maybe...
if people start getting fired for parroting Republican lies and talking points, people will start being more responsible. -JJ

62. Judas Miller betrayed the Times and journalism
My conclusions on Judas Miller and her betrayal of the Times, journalism, and America:

Maureen Dowd said Judy is a tropist, and now, Judy is tropissed.

66. I imagine she needs severance to support her during her book negotiations
I'm glad she's being reamed, all irresponsbile journalists should be held accountable, not just the ones right wing bloggers beat their chests about.
