Powell: 'U.S. Is Not Doing Bad at All'
WTF?

AMHERST, N.Y. (AP) - Former Secretary of State Colin Powell said Wednesday the United States is "not doing bad at all" diplomatically, despite anti-American sentiment over the war in Iraq.

"If you stand back a bit," Powell told an audience at the University at Buffalo, "you might see we have done very well in most parts of the world."

Powell, a guest in the university's Distinguished Speakers Series, outlined strides made in Europe, China and Asia, and predicted nuclear disputes with North Korea and Iran would be solved diplomatically.

They done good for their masters. I've lost all respect for this guy who told the RNC that they had to reach out and help blacks. They reached out and helped him and his son and he's a bought soul again.

12. Loyalist in public, but he works against them at time behind the scenes
as it was rumored that he was trying to derail Bolton.

He hasn't changed much since Mai Lei though has he.

(I'm sure I just mangled that spelling)

18. Well, let's put it this way--his self-promotion has billed him...
... as the world's greatest soldier, but, that's not the case, in fact. He's been a political manipulator--gaining rank and importance by protecting his superiors--for virtually all of his career.

Put him up against Omar Bradley, and he would not shine much at all.

19.  History everyone, evil is his middle name!!!
In 1968, as a staff army major in Vietnam, Colin Powell played a direct role in suppressing the inquiry into the My Lai massacre, and into related atrocities against civilians.

As a White House fellow during the Watergate years he earned a reputation -- but only for keeping his mouth shut.

As a military assistant to Caspar Weinberger during the Reagan administration, he helped to deceive Congress about the trading in heavy weapons with Iran, about the exchange of those weapons for hostages, and about the diversion of the illicit proceeds to finance another illicit operation in Nicaragua.

In Panama, in 1989, he helped shape an operation that totally disregarded international law and took many civilian lives.

During the Gulf War, he strongly opposed any military help for the Kurdish and Shia rebellions against Saddam Hussein.
In the Bosnian conflict, he publicly opposed any intervention against Slobodan Milosevic and his forcible creation of a "Greater Serbia."

As chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under President Bill Clinton, he repeatedly intervened to influence political decisions, not only about the Balkans but about the right of homosexuals to serve in the military.

24. Totally Wrong! IMO Powell did NOT serve honorably ...
Edited on Thu Oct-20-05 04:28 AM by ElectroPrincess
and we all know the smarmy and UNFORGIVABLE "dog and pony" show he and his boys put on for the UN.

Powell was a "spring-butt yes man" Major during the Vietnam War. He was part of upper echelon conspiracy to cover-up WAR CRIMES during the 60's and 70's.

"World's greatest soldier?" Bull Shit!

To buy into such propaganda spewed during his tenure is just plain sad. IMO, et. al., he disgraced the uniform of the US Army during the Vietnam Era. As a veteran, I consider Powell just another one of the sell-outs ... one of the "go to" men who would sell their soul (and he DID!) to the devil for just a little more POWER.

My Father was a Combat Engineer who was battle field commissioned during World War II. He has told me repeatedly how the German Soldiers would scramble and LITERALLY BEG the US Army Troops to "CAPTURE THEM FIRST" during the fall of the Third Reich. It was no secret back then (1940s) that the CRUEL THUGS were those within the RUSSIAN ARMY. During the closing days of WWII, the US Army had a REPUTATION of treating Prisoners of War HUMANELY. Although I'm sure there's SOME hype to this "general belief" but it was still widely believed and, in general, I believe a TRUISM.

Colin Powell disgraces my proud Military Service family's beloved US Army. He is an embarrassment to Army COMBAT Veterans such as my Father, Brother and other ancestors before us. His actions during Vietnam also make his service "a dark chapter" of remembrance for myself and ALL those who have honorably served in the United States Army.

37. The teminology "Powell Doctrine" is spin in itself.
It has been known as the Grant Doctrine since the Civil War. The term "Powell Doctrine" is a neocon hijacking to make Powell look like a great general.

This is the guy that refused to send mech support, when requested, to our forces in Somalia. The result = no mech force to quickly extract the Rangers and many casualties.

The same guy that couldn't find evidence of war crimes in Vietnam.

Powell is an ass-kisser.

He might be the world's greatest ass-kisser but he is far from being the best soldier. I would put him near the bottom of that list. He is a disgrace to the officer corps.

6. Apparently, your former TOP AIDE disagrees, Mr. Powell!
http://news.ft.com/cms/s/afdb7b0c-40f3-11da-b3f9-00000e2511c8.html

In a scathing attack on the record of President George W. Bush, Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson, chief of staff to Mr Powell until last January, said: “What I saw was a cabal between the vice-president of the United States, Richard Cheney, and the secretary of defense, Donald Rumsfeld, on critical issues that made decisions that the bureaucracy did not know were being made.

“Now it is paying the consequences of making those decisions in secret, but far more telling to me is America is paying the consequences.”

Mr Wilkerson said such secret decision-making was responsible for mistakes such as the long refusal to engage with North Korea or to back European efforts on Iran.

It also resulted in bitter battles in the administration among those excluded from the decisions.

“If you're not prepared to stop the feuding elements in the bureaucracy as they carry out your decisions, you are courting disaster. And I would say that we have courted disaster in Iraq, in North Korea, in Iran.”

my brain was in search mode for the Wilkerson points...but you were way ahead carolab -- thanks for posting

Powell seems to be in retirement mode and very out of touch. Of course if the rumor turned out to be true that he exposed Cheney's role in the CIA leak, well it might restore some of that lost credibility. But right now I'm taking that as only a rumor.

Forget the bad - just concentrate on the good.

I hate this self-serving, keep your head in the ostrich hole thinking/spin...

Fuck Powell. He IS a war criminal...and NOTHING he says will change that. He deserves the exact same treatment as anyone in the Bush Regime....resigning didn't absolve him - nothing will absolve him.

If that man gave a damn about America, her image or her people, he would have never lied - he would have never been a part of ANY Bush administration.

You carry water you get wet...Powell is all wet.

Iraq is a clusterf**k which he helped get us into.
Staying the course when the political goals are
out of reach is insanity.

What strides? Asia wants us out of there.
Rummy is sabre rattling at China.
And even our European allies are openly
chafing at U.S. policies.

Mr. Powell, you've just destroyed any credibility
you had left. Will you please shut up and go!

31. "Always look on the bright side of life...
For life is quite absurd,
And death's the final word.
You must always face the curtain with a bow!
Forget about your sin -- give the audience a grin,
Enjoy it -- it's the last chance anyhow!

So always look on the bright side of death!
Just before you draw your terminal breath.
Life's a piece of sh*t,
When you look at it.

Life's a laugh and death's a joke, it's true,
You'll see it's all a show,
Keep 'em laughing as you go.
Just remember that the last laugh is on you!

And always look on the bright side of life...
