SYDNEY, Australia -- The U.S. military said Wednesday it was investigating a report carried on an Australian television network that claimed American soldiers in Afghanistan burned the bodies of two Taliban fighters and then used the action to taunt other Islamic militants.

The SBS television network broadcast video footage that purportedly showed U.S. soldiers burning the bodies of the suspected Taliban fighters in the hills outside the southern village of Gonbaz, near the former Taliban stronghold of Kandahar.

Shortly after the bodies were burned, another group of soldiers allegedly sent taunting messages about the act to the nearby village, according to a transcript of the program.

"Taliban, you are all cowardly dogs. You allowed your fighters to be laid down facing west and burned. You are too scared to come down and retrieve their bodies," said one message read by a soldier, according to the transcript.

1. Frickin' new media!!! There they go, causing riots...
.... throughout the Muslim world, yet again, by reporting the atrocities. If the news media would just not report this stuff, then the Arab and Muslim world would have a better opinion of America.

I wish I could say I was shocked to hear about this, but I'm actually not. Just deeply saddened.

US soldiers burned the bodies of two Taliban fighters in Afghanistan because villagers had not claimed them a day after they were killed and the bodies "were bloated and they stank," a US magazine reported, citing soldiers who were present at the incident.

Australian television reported on Wednesday that soldiers had burned the bodies of two suspected Taliban militants and afterwards used the incident to insult villagers and try to provoke them into attacking US-led coalition troops.

The incident has prompted a US military investigation into the alleged desecration of the corpses, which is in violation of the Geneva Convention on human rights.

It also further clouds the United States's reputation, already tarnished by the sexual humiliation of prisoners at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq and allegations of mistreatment of "war on terror" inmates at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

7. Better than Sadaam's sons who we hunted (and stuffed) like dogs...
Contrary to Muslim wishes for a quick burial they were returned something like 10 days later embalmed, made up, sewn up and still grizzly...
Oh yeah, after releasing pictures of their bloody, mangled corpses to the mass media...
