Ecuador's Restive Indigenous Leaders Point To Bolivia
<clips>

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Fears about violent protests that recently brought down Bolivia's president sparking similar destabilizing movements in Ecuador may be a little premature.

But the potential for unrest in the nearby Andean country is clear and President Lucio Gutierrez's staying power questionable, analysts warn.

Plenty of apparent parallels exist between Ecuador and Bolivia, where indigenous groups and labor unions were the main factors behind the toppling of Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada just over a week ago.

In addition to the large, poor indigenous populations, Gutierrez is politically weak, just as was Sanchez de Lozada, who garnered only 21.5% of the vote last year, edging out Evo Morales, an indigenous leader of coca growers and head of the leftist Movement Toward Socialism party.

1. The indigenes in Ecuador were already getting annoyed with Gutierrez.
Who has failed to keep the promises that put him in office like Mr. de Lozada.
The recent events in Bolivia will just stiffen their spines a bit more.
This seems a bit of a puff piece.
