Since Sept. 11, investigators have been bedeviled by fake terror threats
October 14, 2005, 1:19 PM EDT

NEW YORK -- On the surface, the tip last year from would-be FBI informant Tanveer Choudhry sounded frightening.

<snip>

Authorities say since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, an untold number of hoaxers have preyed on fears of further terrorism on U.S. soil with schemes designed to win favors from the government, settle personal scores or simply cause mischief.

Most of the terror threats are quickly and quietly discounted. But an alleged al-Qaida plot to bomb the New York subway system highlighted the potential for possible threats to spread fear and tie up investigators before they prove to be false alarms.

Hoping to discourage phony threats, Congress passed a law last year making it a crime for anyone to convey false or misleading information about a terrorist attack or possible terrorist attack. If convicted, a defendant can get up to five years in prison; if the hoax causes injury or death, the maximum term would be 20 years to life.

on every aspect of terrorism-from who is a terrorist to when it will happen and what we should do about it?

So it looks like penalties are broadened and increased beyond that of the already standing anti-hoax laws.

I don't think it's going to singlehandedly bring down the government, but it might make for a nice little knife-twist in Karl's ass.

2. yea well
how about Olberman's Nexus Of Terror report where he said that "someone made it up" about the last terra threat in NYC-THAT person needs to go to jail-how much money was NY's costs for police OT alone?There are people doing hard time for a LOT LESS I can assure you that.
