Ousted Ecuadorian president Gutierrez wants to go home
Former Ecuadorian President Lucio Gutierrez said Thursday he was going to return to his own country, where he faces arrest, after giving up asylum rights in Colombia.
During a press conference in Bogota, Gutierrez said it was his "political, civic and patriotic" duty to return "immediately to Ecuador and retake power."
However, he stressed that he will regain power only through "legal and constitutional" resources.
He said current President Alfredo Palacio, who was sworn in in April, was in reality "usurping power."
Gutierrez has claimed to be the victim of a coup and insisted that he still is the Ecuadorian head of state.
