Italy red-faced over false uranium papers
Italy red-faced over false uranium papers
ROME - Italy has been dragged into the long-running dispute over Iraq's alleged purchase of uranium from the African state of Niger, with a newspaper implicating the country's intelligence services and a high-level government committee conceding that Italy could have passed on the disputed information to the United States and Britain.

Yesterday, the left-leaning newspaper La Repubblica heaped embarrassment on the Italian government, publishing clearly false documents that implicated its secret services in the Niger-Iraq uranium affair.

La Repubblica implied in its two-page report that Italy's military intelligence services, and those of Britain and the United States, were apparently duped by obviously questionable material used to bolster the case for war against Iraq.

The documents, said to be at the root of allegations that Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein sought nuclear materials from Niger, are at the centre of an international row.

1. But Bush Is Inviting Him?
As a special guest to this country for his "appreciation" of Italy supporting the "coalition of the willing". How many Italian forces were sent? 1 percent of 1 percent of the total?

4. Perhaps the support provided by Italy was in the form
of documents instead of soldiers.

3. Now we are getting some place!
Interesting, indeed. Yesterday Italy denies, but someone's published incriminating evidence that they did.

Let's keep following the trail....who in the Italian Intel agency was responsible? Why would he fabricate the evidence....where does it lead to?

Will Italians demand to know the truth? I can only hope.

With some luck, we are going to have a lot of governments that are controlled by RW neo-cons go down over this...

5. Rome magistrates launch probe! It will be intersting to see Connections!
"Rome magistrates launch probe into allegations by unnamed US and British officials that phony information on Iraq attempts to buy uranium in Africa came from Italian intelligence. Allegations denied by Italian government "
