Judge in 2000 election recount gets elevated to Circuit Court
He's the one who tried to lower the chad standard, thereby depriving Al Gore of votes.

Gov. Jeb Bush on Wednesday appointed Palm Beach County Judge Charles Burton to the Circuit Court bench, elevating a magistrate whose face was beamed into millions of households when he oversaw the county's recount during the disputed 2000 presidential election.

Burton, 47, who lives west of Boca Raton, is most widely known for his role as chairman of the Palm Beach County Canvassing Board during the recount, but associates described him as a mild-mannered jurist with a sense of humor.

3. No, but we certainly
could expect more from those who are supposed to have dedicated their life to the preservation and development of democracy (yes, that would be "democrats"). In particular, how can a key concept like "accountability" co-exist with the "get-over-it" concept that we are repeatedly asked to accept?

5. Jeb Bush Picks Familiar Face For New Court Position (Ballot Squinter)
Jeb Bush Picks Familiar Face For New Court Position

POSTED: 12:20 pm EDT October 13, 2005
UPDATED: 12:27 pm EDT October 13, 2005

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Gov. Jeb Bush has chosen a familiar face for a new circuit court position.

Bush named Chuck Burton to the position Wednesday. Burton stumbled onto the national stage as chairman of the Palm Beach County local canvassing board, squinting at butterfly ballots and hanging chads for weeks as the world watched.

Bush selected Burton over two other candidates nominated from the county: County Judge Debra Moses Stephens and lawyer Jerald Beer. Burton fills a new judicial post created by the Florida Legislature.

Circuit judges hear felony-level crimes such as rape or murder and civil cases in which the damages exceed $15,000.

10. OMG, he was supposed to be a Democrat
If he and Teresa LaPore are the kind of Democrats we've got in Florida, well no damned wonder we can't win there.

13. He was supposedly a Democrat
but his conservative standards regarding chads probably cost Gore the election.

(snip)

But others involved in the recount retort that ballot marks don't necessarily reflect voters' choices. ``If you just count a ding as a vote, you're no better off than a machine,'' said Palm Beach County Canvassing Board Chairman Burton, a Democrat. ``If you're just counting impressions, then you're really not interpreting the intent of the voter.''

12. But Republicans always eat their own
They play with them for awhile as long as they are useful then cast them aside. Moral: Avoid the GOP as friends.
