Too much coffee can induce aggression and paranoia
By Roger Dobson
26 October 2003

People who drink too much coffee are at risk of caffeine psychosis, according to a new report. It found that too much caffeine can lead to marked changes in personality and make drinkers more aggressive, anxious and temperamental.

"Caffeinism" puts sufferers at further risk of anxiety neurosis, irregular heart beats, insomnia, muscle twitches, and nervous irritability.

The warning comes a week after Tony Blair suffered an irregular heart beat, which he reportedly blamed on too much strong continental coffee at the European Union summit in Brussels. The supraventricular tachycardia, or SVT, that he suffered can be triggered by caffeine.

In the new report, on the potential effects of caffeine on police hostage negotiators, Professor Wayman Mullins of Southwest Texas State University warns: "Tachycardia could be anxiety-producing and lead to the negotiator's stress level rising to abnormal levels,'' he says in the Journal of Police Crisis Negotiations. "The negotiator would likely become overly anxious, nervous, frightened, and concentrate on what was occurring physiologically and not on the hostage-taker."

2. I have been drinking coffee since I was 5 years old. And drink
LOTS of it - 10 CUPS a DAY on the average. I don't have irregular heart beats, insomnia, muscle twitches, or nervous irritability. BUNK!

25. I drink lots of coffee as well
And as far as I know, I haven't had any coffee-induced psychotic episodes. It could be because I roast my own coffee from green coffee beans, and the caffeine content is generally lower than the nasty crap you buy in the store.

If you drink that much coffee and have a little time, it's worth it to roast your own.

35. You probably have what they call ADD.
Self medicating.

Not neccessarily bad.

It helps to get the dopamine neurotransmitters up to par for some.

Same with nicotiene.

4. Then I am ready to KILL on Sunday
My biggest coffee drinking day, with the NY Times and Washington Post. Don't even THINK of screwing with me about noon on Sunday (also a Lions fan, for 41 years. No wonder Sunday is a tough day.)

32. Hey now, faygokid
The Lions aren't the worst team in the NFL. At least not until about 4 pm EST tomorrow.
John
Been suffering with them for 47 years here. I was in diapers the last time the Lions won a championship and I suspect I'll be back in diapers by the time they win one again.

7. LOL
me too. I gave up smoking at the age of 65. I smoked more than two packs of menthol lights cigarettes a day. I am now, after six months of no cigarettes, drinking about six or maybe even more, cups of coffee a day. Ugh--what is worse? I have made up my mind--when I reach the age of eighty, I will commence smoking cigarettes again.

15. hey Marianne
that happened to me too; I replaced my cig vice with a coffee vice. After a year or so, my coffee intake is back to normal (too much, but normal). :D

Good job on giving up the cigs!

I'm whether supporting some mind-blowing new-age-nonsense nor detect WMDs everywhere. Though lately, I started to think about invading one or the other country from time to time and to overthrow one or the other government. Should I change my habits?

17. You notice this dweeb doesn't mention that coffee protects against
Parkinson's Disease (google grandinetti). Many coffee hating scientists have tried for decades to find bad things about coffee, and have failed miserably. Furthermore, not only is the Parkinson's Disease story holding up, but there was a nice study or two showing that you drive better after a coupla cups of good brew. All the tachycardia, blood pressure effects etc are seen only in people who do not ordinarily drink coffee, not in daily drinkers.

20. Oh, no!
I'm sure that in about a week, CSPI ("Center for Science in the Public Interest") will move to have coffee banned. (They also want to ban megavitamins and tax foods they don't like.)

Recently, coffee was discovered to be a rich source of phytochemicals, similar to those found in tomatoes, broccoli, or green tea. (scientific intro: food.oregonstate.edu/c.html ; popular article: www.1konacoffee.com/coffeebenefits.html)

Certainly, "too much" coffee can hurt you. The same is true of tofu.

I've been more aggressive, anxious, temperamental and I've suffered from anxiety neurosis, irregular heart beats, insomnia, muscle twitches, and had all sorts of nervous irritability ever since the moronic pile of chimp shit stole the WH!!! Caffeine has nothing to do with it, since 12 December of 2000. Get that simpering stupid whistle ass out and maybe we will all feel good again! I know I will!
