U.S. death toll in Afghanistan hits 200

DANIEL COONEY
Associated Press

KABUL, Afghanistan - An American soldier who stepped on a land mine became the 200th U.S. military member to be killed in and around Afghanistan since the Taliban was ousted four years ago, officials reported Saturday.

This year has been the deadliest yet for the 21,000-strong U.S.-led coalition force, with 84 soldiers killed. The toll comes amid a major increase in insurgent violence that has left more than 1,300 people dead since March.

The latest American death came Friday while U.S. troops patrolled in a part of Helmand province that has been wracked by violence by Taliban-led rebels, a military statement said.

But Karzai himself has been critical of the U.S. military lately, challenging the need for major military operations by foreign troops, saying there was no longer a major terrorist threat in Afghanistan.

5. Yes. The death toll has gone up every year since it started, but
last year, which was the previous worst, was 52 and the numbers so far for this year are 87 with 3 months still to go. I will be very surpised if it doesen't hit the triple digits for the year.

6. Isn't this typical? They'll do EVERYTHING possible to cover up
the hideous, hellish destruction they've created.

You can see, from the article, they expected people to buy their story, too!

241 is considerably more than 200. Thanks for shining a light on this.

7. Does the AP story refer to combat fatalities?
I know a number of casualties have been caused by accidents and friendly fire incidents.

8. I believe the number of combat fatalities is lower than 200.
At least the figure that I heard on TV had combat and non-combat nearly equal in Afghanistan. The list on icasualties isn't comprehensive as to causes of death. I don't think the 200 figure is combat fatalities though. The number seems to just be arbitrary.
