Bush gives Oliphant 2 weeks to fix problems

BY ERIKA BOLSTAD
ebolstad@herald.com

Gov. Jeb Bush said Friday he could suspend Broward Supervisor of Elections Miriam Oliphant, but only if she fails to comply with a two-week deadline to improve her office and meet the recommendations in a highly critical state report.

<snip>
Secretary of State Glenda Hood sent the observers in after Oliphant fired four people, including key supervisors.

Hood's team will go back after Nov. 10 to determine whether Oliphant made progress. Then, they'll make a final recommendation about whether Bush should suspend her. They'll be especially focused on Oliphant's preparations for the 2004 presidential elections cycle, Bush said.

<snip>
Earlier this year, Bush thwarted county commissioner's efforts when they tried to recommend that she be suspended. Before they could meet, Bush sent word that he would not suspend Oliphant unless she was charged with a crime.

1. Well, my gosh, if Miss Glenda is on the job we can sleep well.
I wonder how many Florida papers ran editorials today to beg Jeb to oust Oliphant? I wonder how much of what has happened there goes under the tin foil hat category.

I am sure that Miss Glenda and Mr. Jeb will fix it up beautifully!

;(

2. Ms Oliphant registered over 1 million new voters (in a Dem county)
Edited on Sat Oct-25-03 02:37 PM by Mika
The repukes do not want her to register more Broward residents.
They've tried many types of campaigns against her.
From extreme underfunding, new f-ed up voting machines,
media smear tactics, to frivolous legal challenges.
Broward is heavily Dem. The repugs really want to can her.

4. That's why we are asking and wondering. It is fishy.
If they are out to get her, you will only hear negative things. You won't hear the stuff that is being done behind her back to make her look bad.

I am going to find the article where she has filed a suit against the commissioners concerning the voting machine bid.

5. Oliphant wanted a paper trail, or ballot apparently. A couple of articles
Oliphant Rages at Leaders
SNIP..."''Broward County is facing a serious crisis concerning voting machines,'' Oliphant said. ``We may have on our hands a $17 million white elephant.''

Commissioners on Tuesday had asked their staff to look into retrofitting the county's 5,200 touch-screen voting machines with printers, which they said would give voters more confidence in the results. Miami-Dade County commissioners have asked for a similar report.

In Broward, commissioners also want to look into selling the touch-screen equipment and buying an optical-scan system in which voters would mark paper ballots with pencils.

Oliphant accused the commission of ignoring her initial request two years ago to buy a different touch-screen system, which she said could have produced a ``paper printout of the vote.''

That equipment, manufactured by California-based Sequoia, has an internal printer, but does not print a record for each voter, a county official said.

Oliphant also charged that county leaders had tried to micromanage her office ``from the moment I took office in 2001."

MORE:
Oliphant did not want ES&S systems machines

SNIP...."In Broward, Graber and elections supervisor Miriam Oliphant were opposed to buying the ES&S machines last November.

Graber said he was concerned that poll workers would have trouble learning how to use the machines. A report by a county administrator released last week found ES&S fulfilled its contractual obligations, saying Oliphant was responsible for training poll workers.

Graber said he knew that Mortham lobbied for ES&S, but was unaware she also represented the county association......."

I do not know who or what is really at fault there. I only know one thing. Jeb and ES&S have consistently refused to help. Is she at fault. I don't know, I don't live there.

Bottom line, if Jeb appoints someone like Glenda, we know for sure it will all be taken care of properly.....for the Bush family.

8. Flordia Dems should get over there and help Oliphant, IMHO.

Note,
"That equipment, manufactured by California-based Sequoia, has an internal printer, but does not print a record for each voter, a county official said."

The voting system should print out a voter verifiable ballot, IMHO.

6. So what happened to Teresa LePore's Task Force?
Edited on Sat Oct-25-03 06:27 PM by DoYouEverWonder
Did they ever file a report and/or make any recommendations? Or was that whole idea just some more of Jeb's bs, to postpone dealing with Broward County until he could turn it into a crisis once it's too late to fix it for the 2004 election?

10. The Oliphant family seems to blame the problems on homosexuals.and whites.
Oliphant's sister, Robin Darville, was fired Thursday morning from her $30,000-a-year job as a staff secretary inside the Broward County public defender's office. The public defender, Alan Schreiber, said he called Darville to inform her of the firing.

In a public tirade caught by a television news crew on Wednesday, Darville said employees of the elections office would not work for Oliphant because she is black, alleged that the male employees of the department are homosexual, and that the county engages in racial practices.

"This is a racist, racist county," Darville said just before police escorted her out of a government office building. "It's a shame what they're doing ... All that Mrs. Oliphant has done is try to help people and they're accusing Mrs. Oliphant of all this craziness."

This hack has screwed up the last three elections. Left in office I have no doubt she will screw up a fourth. And still most of you can't defend her any more strongly.

11. Good, tlb, turn it all over to Glenda Hood and Jeb.
Actually we were questioning if there were other things going on, or at least I was. I know she has repeatedly asked for help and more money.

If you really think that asking questions is out of line, then please, please, let Jeb and his right hand lady take over Broward elections completely.

Go right ahead. You were very insulting in your comments, BTW. Jeb and Glenda are wreaking havoc all over the state, and there is no one to stop them.

I don't intend to ask questions anymore about it. If that is what you want, that is what you are getting.

I actually was not even aware she was black,.....how about that for my ignorance. I am white, she is black. I don't care. I was not aware of it. Guess I am too busy stupidly defending what I don't understand. Hey, I don't live there.

Don't worry, Jeb is going to make a move soon. All the papers this week and editorials won't let him do otherwise. Good luck there in Broward.
