Steady Numbers for Flores Nano in Peru
Steady Numbers for Flores Nano in Peru

(Angus Reid Global Scan) – Lourdes Flores Nano is still the frontrunner in the early stages of Peru’s presidential race, according to a poll by IMA. 28.1 per cent of respondents in Lima and Callao would support for the Popular Christian Party (PPC) member.

Former president Alan García of the American Revolutionary People’s Alliance (APRA) is second with 15.6 per cent, followed by former head of state Valentín Paniagua of Popular Action (AP) with 10.3 per cent, and Jaime Salinas of National Justice (JN) with five per cent.

Former president Alberto Fujimori is currently living in Japan. Fujimori administered the government from 1990 to 2000, but cannot seek office until 2010 because of a congressional decision. Current Lima mayor Luis Castañeda has ruled out a presidential bid.

On Oct. 5 in Tokyo, Fujimori announced his intention to run for president, declaring, "Support for my candidacy is high, and therefore, I am prepared to mount a legal strategy that will enable me to participate in the next election."
