Bush says New York officials exercised own prerogative in announcing subway terror threat

WASHINGTON (AP) _ President Bush said Friday that New York City officials exercised their own prerogative in publicizing a subway terror threat, declining to second guess that decision or suggest they had overreacted.

"Our job is to gather intelligence and pass it on to local authorities. And they make the judgments necessary to respond," Bush told reporters. Administration security officials had said on Thursday the threat to New York was of "doubtful credibility," a phrase repeated earlier Friday by Bush's spokesman.

"The level of cooperation between the federal government and the local government is getting better and better. And part of that level of cooperation is the ability to pass information on. And we did, and they responded," Bush said during a picture-taking session at the White House with the prime minister of Hungary.

Asked if he thought New York officials had overreacted, Bush said: "I think they took the information we gave and made the judgments they thought were necessary. And the American people have got to know that, one, we're collecting information and sharing it with local authorities on a timely basis. And that's important."

7. That's just what I thought- It's good to see him in a defensive posture
The hits are landing and someone's advising him of the damage. So far, they've been pretty inept at stemming critics once they've acknowledged them. It just draws attention to the topic.

10. More "Blame mayor" crappola from WH
Nagin didn't do enough soon enought according to WH.
Bloomberg, aware of PR that Nagin didn't do enough, fast enough, errs on the side of caution and WH blames him for that.

Message to mayors and local elected officials: Go for the bastards throats, you're gonna get blamed no matter what you do.

8. According to Rachel Maddow on AAR this morning
Edited on Fri Oct-07-05 12:11 PM by rocknation
The city actually received the information nearly a week ago, but didn't receive "clearance from Washington" to announce it until yesterday afternoon. The mayor needed clearance to announce something that he'd been told was of "doubtful credibility?" Then why did Bloomberg announce it at all? To do a President Potty Stop favor by creating a media diversion from that crummy speech and Rove's upcoming indictments? Or to give himself a legitimate-looking excuse to cancel the debate in Harlem?

9. I saw on cnn
last night that New york has it's own terrorism team of over a thousand and have police officers in many other countries including Jordan collecting information. This just feels wrong to me. Does this mean they are helping interrogate people in other countries. Does anyone know?

11. Why is his reaction always either...
"Don't look at me!" or "I didn't do it!" so much of the terror alert process is to just periodically scare people but more likely ongoing cover their asses. If they keep saying 'something is going to happen' when something happens they can say "see, we told you."

These people have proven they lie, and proven they can't interpret intelligence data, why should we believe they can assess vague terror threats? They can't, they are incompetent.

13. Bush is very fond of declaring
what "the American people have got to know".
Like he's demanding it of us, that we believe his lies.

Oh, and billion$ of dollars and 4 years = "getting better and better".
Sort of like Nancy Reagan's stage-whisper of "Doing everything we can", and equally specious.

19. The ass should have kept
his mouth shut. Better he distances himself from false terror threats since he is so well known for lying and falsifying.
