Arnold Schwarzenegger will reject most of Gov. Gray Davis' last-minute appointments but allow 17 of them to stand when he takes office next month, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday.

In the last days of his administration, Davis named 12 members of his staff to jobs with salaries that range from $86,196 a year to $117,396. He also named 77 other people to unpaid positions on various state boards and commissions.

The fate of those appointments was thrown into doubt Friday when state Senate President Pro Tem John Burton said he would not call a special legislative session to confirm them before Davis, a fellow Democrat, leaves office. If they are still unconfirmed by the Senate when Schwarzenegger takes over, he could simply withdraw them.

Instead, the Times reported, Burton hammered out a deal in which the Republican Schwarzenegger will withdraw the names of 77 appointees but will let 17 others stand. The 17 will be a mixture of both paid and unpaid appointments.

Whether anyone likes it or not -- and believe me, I don't -- Arnold recieved the support of more voters (48%) than rejected the Recall(45%). Any serious talk of a revenge recall was dropped the day following the vote.

The Recall may not have been a grassroots movelment, but the voters went along with it. In about two weeks, Schwarzenegger will be the governor and we'll have to deal with him.

As things are on DU, I will issue the disclaimer that accepting the fact he is governor in no way means I have any confidence in this gorilla to solve problems or that he isn't the stooge of the energy pirates. This deal concerns appointments, many of them minor. The Democrats, we would hope, are devising a strategy to prevent any sweetheart settlement with the pirates or reintroduction of energy deregulation.

SFGate emntions them, but I DO have a great deal of trust for Burton who is about as liberal as they get and a great state senator. If he negotiated this to hold out an olive branch to Arnold and say, "We will work with you, if you work with us" he will gladly go after Arnold when Arnold breaks deals.

I'm not terribly pleased that SO MUCH POWER was given to Arnold, and did support Davis, but frankly, Davis had five years to fill these positions...
