"The militants believe that controlling one country will rally the Muslim masses, enabling them to overthrow all moderate governments in the region and establish a radical Islamic empire that spans from Spain to Indonesia," Bush said. The president has been stepping up his defense of his Iraq policy in the face of declining public support for the war and a crucial test in Iraq with the Oct. 15 constitutional referendum.

In a speech before the National Endowment for Democracy, Bush likened the ideology of Islamic militants to communism. And he said they are being "aided by elements of the Arab news media that incites hatred and anti-semitism."

"Against such an enemy, there's only one effective response: We never back down, never give in and never accept anything less than complete victory," Bush declared.

He spoke as recent polls show declining American support for the war that has thus far claimed more than 1,940 members of the U.S. military. His Iraq policy faces a crucial test in Iraq's Oct. 15 referendum on a new constitution, a vote that Bush has said terrorists will try to derail.

eep. that was a freakin' nuremburg rally. ok, lets see. 911... terra terra.. bin laden... iraq... terra... iran... syria... islam is evil... iran... terra... 911... bin laden... syria... terra...

and there were a good dozen phrases that were clearly pure projection of bush administration's intentions. the several mentions of bin laden were pretty atypical i thought. warmongering re: iran and syria, insulted china and russia obliquely, and this phrase really stood out for me. "evil men obsessed with ambition and unburdoned by conscience' seems a fine description of bush and his cabal. that was a provocative and offensive speech, one that in essence, calls islam evil. i'd call it preaching to the choir. i can't see anyone but the rabid war supporters liking this speech. i doubt it will help him in the ratings. no specific talk about the actual plans he claims to have for the iraq war. that won't amuse anyone. only a few stumbles tho. he had to suppress the 'smirk' a half dozen times while talking about death and killing, he did the 'head tic' at least once and that 'breathy smile' thing he did a few times too. he's clearly been coached about his upper body movements, he managed to avoid his usual 'leaning' thing for the most part. even his hand motions were less than usual.
some have speculated this speech is supposed to distract from the impending fitzgerald grand jury action. the speech itself wasn't substantive, it was hate mongering rhetoric that will thrill only the freeper types, people have been practically BEGGING for concret answers regarding the war in iraq and none was forthcoming. he DID say something about being in the 'middle' of the crusade that is the 'lengthy' war on terror.he really demonized iran and syria, but thats nothing new. he could be TRYING to provoke controversy about the speech.
