PBS hires Washington Post veteran as ombudsman
PBS hires Washington Post veteran as ombudsman

By Brooks Boliek

WASHINGTON (Hollywood Reporter) - PBS said Wednesday it has hired the ombudsman of the Washington Post for the same position at the public broadcast institution.

Veteran journalist Michael Getler will seek to ensure that PBS upholds its own standards of journalistic ethics for both online and on-air content. His reports and commentary will be published on http://www.PBS.org. Getler will begin November 15 after his contract with the Post runs out.

Getler will have complete authority to determine what issues are examined and full independence in assessing them. He will report to PBS president and CEO Pat Mitchell.

Public broadcasting has come under closer scrutiny after the former chairman of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), the federal government's major funder for public TV and radio programing, became a lightning rod for criticism when he ordered an auditing of Bill Moyers' program "Now" for liberal bias.

on Downing Street memo-"...Not surprisingly, other pundits have joined the Woolsey smoke machine. On June 19, Washington Post ombudsman Michael Getler opined that "maybe 'fixed' means something different in British-speak." And Christopher Hitchens, in an article posted on Slate the same day Woolsey went on "Hardball," wrote: "Never mind for now that the English employ the word "fix" in a slightly different way—a better term might have been 'organized.'"..."

"...Reviewing that evidence on May 26, The Washington Post's ombudsman, Michael Getler, alluded to one very telling sign from a conversation between CIA Director George Tenet and former U.S. Sen. David Boren over breakfast on Sept. 11. When an aide rushed up to tell Tenet of the attacks, Tenet's immediate reaction was: ``This has bin Laden all over it. . . . I wonder if it has anything to do with this guy taking pilot training?''..." (stinks to me like he's planting a story for Tenet)
