Edited on Wed Oct-05-05 05:41 PM by UpInArms

Oct. 5, 2005 — Both the FBI and CIA are calling it the first case of espionage in the White House in modern history.

Officials tell ABC News the alleged spy worked undetected at the White House for almost three years. Leandro Aragoncillo, 46, was a U.S. Marine most recently assigned to the staff of Vice President Dick Cheney.

"I don't know of a case where the vetting broke down before and resulted in a spy being in the White House," said Richard Clarke, a former White House advisor who is now an ABC News consultant.

Federal investigators say Aragoncillo, a naturalized citizen from the Philippines, used his top secret clearance to steal classified intelligence documents from White House computers.

In 2000, Aragoncillo worked on the staff of then-Vice President Al Gore. When interviewed by Philippine television, he remarked how valued Philippine employees were at the White House.

"I think what they like most is our integrity and loyalty," Aragoncillo said.

This isn't in the headlines by ABC, you would think who originally hired the spy would be important. They would be responsible for the vetting.

I wonder if that fool Richard Clarke would be bashing the white house if he knew the spy was originally hired and vetted by Al Gore.

89. He wasn't spying for Islam terrorist or anything like that, he . . .
Edited on Wed Oct-05-05 07:58 PM by Paranoid Pessimist
. . . was spying for enemies of President Gloria Arroyo, who were trying to organize a (now seemingly failed) coup to take advantage of the fact that President Arroyo has been weakened by some incomprehensible scandal (my wife is Filipino and I travel there frequently). No doubt there will be folks who will try to spin this into something dangerous and threatening to Americans, but Philippine politics is hilarious comedy. The previous president, a broken down old actor nicknamed Erap, is in custody and for awhile it looked like President Arroyo would have an adjoining cell down the hall.

168. No, not the militant islam group
Factions like this in Philippine elections are about getting your guys in there to grab up the graft. Political corruption is a big opportunity for those who can position themselves, and they all feel entitled to it. Imelda Marcos is on the television lately whining that all her stolen booty is being auctioned off, and she believes she's entitled to every bit of it. That's just the way things are.

he was working for the FBI at Ft. Monmouth. He's charged with:

The audit revealed that from between about May 1 and Aug. 15, 2005, Aragoncillo either printed or downloaded 101 classified documents concerning the Philippines, of which 37 were classified at the "Secret" level. he'd left the White House several years before.

133. Easy to send any type of documents via e-mail
Just scan a hardcopy into a .pdf, then send via e-mail. The only difference between sending top secret documents and normal unclassified documents that businesses constantly send each other is the coding on the original document. If a hard copy had been scanned and converted into a .pdf, there's no way to tell the security classification until the file was opened.
If he had some independence at his workstation, no one would know unless his e-mails were intercepted and read - or when people started tracing the found illegally obtained documents back to the source.
With the constant intrigue just under the surface going one in the Philippines, I wouldn't be surprised if that's how he was caught -US top secret documents were found when some Philippine military officer buddy of his was caught up in yet another coup attempt.

If you were to listen to chimpass' excuses...6 yrs after Richards left office and chimp was STILL blaming her for bad test scores and everything else that was going wrong in Texas (under his regime).

Texans have seen this before. Asswipe chimphead will be blaming Clinton for everything right up til Jan 2009. His library will probably have a "Blame Clinton" wing right next to the "Blame Richards" wing.

and Clinton. From ABC story.

According to friends, in addition to his work for Cheney and Gore, Aragoncillo claimed he also worked with President Clinton and Condoleezza Rice when she was the national security advisor.

Limpballs and Shannity, plus Drudge and all the other RW media lackeys will try to pin this on Clinton and Gore.

IMHO looks like the FBI did a bad job of vetting this guy. And I don't blame either administration on this one.

The two were charged with espionage on two counts, first with conspiring to defraud the U.S. government by disclosing classified information under the following circumstances:

The marines are charged with stealing classified documents, dossier's that are filled with dirt about Arroyo and giving them to her opposition.

Here are my questions:

1) Why are we collecting dirt on Arroyo?

2) Is it possible that the BFEE wants to oust Arroyo, and these marines are the tools that they used to disseminate this info?

The defendants face a charge of conspiracy and a charge of acting as unregistered foreign agents, the latter of which carries a sentence of up to 10 years and a $250,000 fine. Aragoncillo also was charged with unauthorized use of a government computer, which carries a sentence of up to 10 years and a $250,000 fine.

EX-LACSON AIDE NABBED IN U.S. FOR ESPIONAGE

WASHINGTON, September 14, 2005 (STAR) By Jose Katigbak, STAR Washington bureau - Cashiered police Senior Superintendent Michael Ray "Ninoy" Aquino, wanted for murder in the Philippines, has been arrested in New Jersey on charges of espionage.

The Philippines does not have an extradition request for Aquino, said Michael Drewniak, a spokesman for the US Attorney’s Office.

Federal Bureau of Investigation agents arrested Aquino, an aide of Sen. Panfilo Lacson when he was Philippine National Police chief, along with Filipino-American Leandro Aragoncillo, an FBI intelligence analyst and former US Marine, for allegedly stealing "highly classified" material stored in computers at an FBI
office.

Oct. 5, 2005 — Both the FBI and CIA are calling it the first case of espionage in the White House in modern history.

Officials tell ABC News the alleged spy worked undetected at the White House for almost three years. Leandro Aragoncillo, 46, was a U.S. Marine most recently assigned to the staff of Vice President Dick Cheney.

www.dss.mil/ is their website. Maybe the Office of Inspector General of the Defense Dept. or whatever agency does oversight can report something back to Congress on this. ABC is making a point of showing this guy was hired on under VP Gore's time also. In any event, those in the DOD who were responsible for vetting may want to look into the FBI's Hanssen case for any similarities. The question becomes "why ?" did he do it.

116. WHITE HOUSE SPY LINKED TO COUP
WHITE HOUSE SPY LINKED TO COUP
6.10.2005. 12:06:05

The American ABC television network has claimed that a former US Marine and naturalised US citizen from the Philippines breached security at the White House and allegedly used his top secret clearances to steal documents from the office of Vice President Dick Cheney.

ABC alleged that Leandro Aragoncillo, 46, worked undetected at the White House for almost three years before leaving to take a job with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

He was arrested last month and accused by the FBI of downloading more than 100 classified documents from FBI computers.

Officials told ABC the classified material which Mr Aragoncillo stole included damaging dossiers on the president of the Philippines.

They were allegedly passed on to opposition politicians planning a coup in the Pacific nation.

The White House referred reporters to the FBI, but confirmed an investigation had been launched.

"No comment, all questions have to be addressed to the FBI, it's a pending investigation and the White House will do its best to cooperate," said deputy White House spokesman Trent Duffy.

THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF Investigation had a hand in the leak of classified information to Philippine officials, and tried to cover up when it was exposed to the media by suing its agent, according to retired Navy Commodore Rex Robles.

"My assumption is that it's a controlled leak gone wrong," Robles, chief of the Philippine military intelligence service's domestic section in 1968-72, said yesterday in a phone interview.

He was referring to US authorities' purported practice of sending intelligence information to political leaders and top businessmen in an effort to build communication lines.

Robles said it was possible an overzealous agent "who wanted to go up the ladder" exposed the communication of FBI classified information to outsiders "without knowing it was a legitimate operation" of Leandro Aragoncillo, the conduit.

Former police senior superintendents Michael Ray Aquino and Cesar Mancao secured work and student visas in the U.S. last year despite the cancellation of their passports, a senior official said.

"This has stalled their extradition after their passports were cancelled on the request of the Philippine government last year," said Director Reynaldo Wycoco of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).

"Filipinos in the U.S. have provided us this information," said Wycoco. "It is possible that they used fake documents in obtaining their visas.

"We have sought the help of the Federal Bureau of Investigation to find out how Aquino and Mancao were able to secure these permits and visas considering that their passports have been cancelled," Wycoco noted.

Former White House staffer investigated
Sources say probe involves possible stolen information

Thursday, October 6, 2005; Posted: 8:10 a.m. EDT (12:10 GMT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A former Marine (arrested in Sept. on one count of conspiracy and one count of acting as an unregistered agent subject to the direction of a foreign official) who worked at the White House is under (a new) investigation for allegedly misusing his top-secret clearance to steal classified information from computers, multiple U.S. government sources told CNN late Wednesday.

Leandro Aragoncillo, 46, who worked as an FBI intelligence analyst after working at the White House, worked in the vice president's office from 1999 to 2001, during both the Clinton-Gore and Bush-Cheney administrations (and was arrested in September, along with Michael Aquino, deputy director of the Philippines National Police and enemy of Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, on charges that he used an FBI database to download and pass along classified information). <snip>

Among the documents that Aragoncillo allegedly downloaded was a dossier on Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, which he passed on to her political opposition in the Philippines, according to CNN's multiple government sources.
<snip>

According to a criminal complaint, Aragoncillo allegedly used an FBI database at the Fort Monmouth Information Technology Center in New Jersey to search, download and print classified documents concerning the Philippines. He then allegedly sent e-mails, with the classified documents attached, to at least three people in the Philippines, including current and former government officials, according to the complaint.<snip>

We know they have the information to construct WMDs in the areas west, north, east and south of Manila, because their spy stole the plans when Dick Cheney left them on the copy machine. By the way, we are aware that the Philippines have a substantial amount of oil, which has nothing whatsoever to do with our invasion, so there.

"The Philippines is currently in a dispute with the Republic of China (Taiwan), the People's Republic of China, Vietnam and Malaysia over the oil- and natural gas-rich Spratly Islands and Scarborough Shoal, and with Malaysia over Sabah." -
