Lott: 'Not comfortable' with Miers' nomination
Miss. Senator says he'll need more information before supporting nominee

Add Senator Trent Lott (R-Miss.) to the list of Republicans not entirely pleased with President Bush's nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court.

Lott, appearing on MSNBC-TV on Wednesday morning, told anchor Randy Meier that wants more information about Miers.

"I need to know a lot more about her, her experience and her level of competence and what is her philosophy. I really don't know this lady and I do think I owe it to my constituents and to my own conscience to do due diligence and find out actually who this person is," he said.

...

"I don't just automatically salute or take a deep bow anytime a nominee is sent up," he said. "I have to find out who these people are, and right now, I'm not satisfied with what I know. I'm not comfortable with the nomination, so we'll just have to work through the process in due time."

1. Oh, so YOU want more information
but if the Democrats ask for the same, we're obstructionists. I get it.

2. Stand up for constituents? That's a switch for member of Congress, eh?
Wish I could say the same about my Dem Senators. But the quote that he doesn't "automatically salute" seems like a lie to me. That's the name of the game with the RNC right now.

4. Lott just wants his house (with big porch) built first
The sooner the better. Once reconstruction of the Gulf states is focused primarily on rebuilding his house, Lott will capitulate. Not approving of Miers is Lott's sweet little way of sending a personal message to his good buddy, Dipshit George. :sarcasm:

5. I'm not buying this right wing bullshit
I think the Dems are being set up to vote unanimously for her. I think they know she is a rightwingnut radical born again fundie and they are just playing the game.Harry Reid coming out with her.....God they looked like they were announcing their engagement for Khrists sake.

I think this is a very clever stunt on the part of the repukes. They are playing reverse psychology on the Dems and the Dems are falling for it hook, line and sinker. I hope I am wrong. Time will tell.

7. Watch Lott closely now. He is very bitter -- as his book shows abundantly
I heard him a week or so ago, and he was very critical of Bush and his FEMA. He truly feels he had been betrayed by B when he was sacked as the Majority Leader, and he is quite a loose cannon now. Payback time.

8. Nonsense
Absolute utter nonsense.

Not everything is some Rovian gambit, for Chrissakes.

Jesus, we beat ourselves with self-doubt everytime.

9. It really doesn't matter if we vote for her unanimously or not.
The confirmation voting record is little more than a footnote in history. It certainly doesn't change anything if she's approved by a 99-1 margin or a 51-49 margin. She'll be a Supreme Court Justice for life either way.

6. this makes me wonder
if bush has nominated someone so terrifying, even they are afraid. sometimes i look at the ways things are going and think that it's all a game: they nominate/hire someone who appears very conservative/neocon but turns out to be far less conservative/neocon than on first glance. by hiring someone who appears this way, it enables them to get the initial approval of their base but over time it enables rethugs to say "see they are just libruls in neocon clothing" and the repugs can continue bitching about and "fighting" to get rid of things like abortion, environmental protection or any "librul" law etc. but as many on DU have said, in order for the repubs to survive they NEED these pts. to rally around.. so for ex. doing away w/ abortion would eliminate a large part of their platform.

now enter miers.

if it is indeed true that she is the epitome of the faithful neocon automatron that she is being made out to represent.. then maybe even lott et al are running scared. what if she does appear to be just as conservative/neocon as we think (or worse) and what if meirs WILL do away with abortion.. then what do lott et al have as a platform in the future..

that's why i think it's just a game.. of social control.. enough control to let you feel the pressure, but never enough to kill ya. but with miers.. who knows..

11. Lott may be looking for payback.
He was shafted by the wingers and he's not happy about it. He feels that he was not properly paid back for his work. That's why he wrote his book. Hopefully he sticks it to them.

12. Hmmmm...makes me wonder if * "declaration" to have Lott's house rebuilt
Edited on Wed Oct-05-05 12:20 PM by Whoa_Nelly
Calling him "his good friend", as well as saying he would be the first to sit on his front porch, was a nasty and thinly-veiled dig at Lott...

15. What Georgie wants, Georgie gets.
Not to sound like a cynic, but until the majority of his own base turns against him, anything * proposes is going to be pushed through in one form or another. Somehow, some way, they'll get someone this inexperienced into the justice chair.
