Blunt seeks surer footing
By Jonathan E. Kaplan and Susuan Crabtree
Rep. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), who has moved at least temporarily into the majority leader’s position, is working to solidify his standing within the Republican Conference after last week’s jarring indictment of Rep. Tom DeLay’s (R-Texas).
Since a Texas grand jury delivered the indictment and House GOP rules forced DeLay to resign his leadership post, House Republicans have been trying to find their way in a radically altered political landscape.
The stakes are particularly high for Blunt, whom Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) tapped for the powerful leadership post DeLay left behind. Blunt was named to the position only after a series of leadership bungles that left many in the conference griping about the lack of planning for life after an indictment and bemoaning the process in which a temporary leader was foisted upon them, according to numerous lawmakers and GOP aides.
Rank-and-file Republicans would have preferred to have Hastert call for a vote or at least allow the conference a long session to vent their frustrations and thoughts about how best to proceed, the GOP sources said.
