PALO CAMPANA, El Salvador, Oct 1 (Reuters) - El Salvador's largest volcano erupted for the first time in a century on Saturday, killing two people and forcing thousands to flee their homes.

The Ilamatepec volcano, also known as Santa Ana, hurled out hot rocks, ash and boiling water on Saturday morning and a massive plume of smoke rose more than 10 miles (16 km) into the air.

Two people were killed under a landslide caused by the volcano's eruption in the small community of Palo Campana, near the crater, the government said.

A few homes were destroyed. "I have lost everything. I have no money, nothing, just my children and my husband," said 73-year-old Rosa Flores, whose small home was set ablaze by a red-hot rock as she made breakfast.

The volcano spat rocks the size of cars, witnesses said

El Salvador's highest volcano, Ilamatepec, has erupted, killing two people and forcing thousands to evacuate the area.
The eruption released giant plumes of smoke and hurled ash and burning rock into the air, witnesses said.

Scientists said the volcano had spat rocks as far as 1.5km (0.93 miles) from its crater.

There have also been reports of lava rocks the size of cars, and villagers fleeing from a flood of boiling water.

Ilamatepec, also known as the Santa Ana volcano, had lain dormant since 1904.

It lies about 60km west of the capital, San Salvador.

4. Best wishes to the people there.
I was a tourist there in the early 90's. I was on a surf trip and wanted to see the Cathedral in Santa Ana.
Beautiful place and wonderful people that treated me great.
Even though the war had just ended and much of the population was unhappy with the U.S. involvement.
I hope the eruption is a temporary event, not disrupting lives too much.

5. The Soufriere HIlls Volcano
in Montserrat also erupted (in 1995) after 100 years although there were a few warning signs. No doubt others in our hemisphere are getting worried now.

Sadly with the rain around the region at this time, El Salvador can expect mud slidies to follow. Too sad - the poor always suffer.
