NYT: Embattled Republicans Seek to Regain Control of Agenda
Hey, what's that sound?

It's the Republican political machine collapsing.

Embattled Republicans Seek to Regain Control of Agenda

WASHINGTON, Oct. 1 - After a brutal political month, Republicans are scrambling both to reassure their conservative base and to send a broader message to the American public - that they are, in fact, confronting the real-world issues of soaring gas prices, Hurricane Katrina relief, Iraq and immigration, while the Democrats are consumed with partisan warfare.

In a range of interviews on Friday, Republicans acknowledged the shock waves of the last few weeks, capped by the indictment of Representative Tom DeLay of Texas, the House majority leader, which forced the reorganization of the Republican House leadership even as it struggled to deal with the fallout from Hurricane Katrina.

"It's been a difficult week, I'm not going to sugarcoat it," said Representative David Dreier, the chairman of the Rules Committee, who has assumed new duties in the reshuffling. "We know we've got a big challenge ahead, but we've got an agenda."

Representative Peter T. King, Republican of New York and chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, agreed. "You get your job done," he said. "You can't panic. Even though our poll numbers are going down, there's no great love for the Democrats, no great support."

9. "The Republican Party...is on the ropes right now,"
<snif>
"Still, some Republicans remain dismayed at their party's plight, and some of the strongest assessments come from Republicans with national ambitions. "The Republican Party has taken some real body blows and is on the ropes right now," said Tim Pawlenty, the Republican governor of Minnesota. Because of recent events, he added, "Democrats basically have been keeping their mouth shut and watching as the Republicans kind of implode."

5. Please, allow me to rewrite that for them
While the Democrats are consumed in a pursuit for justice against corruption within the Republican Party.

There, all better and much more factual. ;)

6. That is factual.
It never ceases to amaze me how repuke talking points can be slipped in and they think no one will notice. Does anyone read these things before they go in this paper, or are they just another corporate ass-kisser?

15. I've come to the conclusion that they think they are being "fair"
Can't talk bad about the Republicans without throwing in a zinger against the Democrats is fair in their eyes. If they had adhered to this same practice during the Clinton Administration I might be more forgiving. Since they didn't I just think they are spineless jellyfish afraid to be to tell the truth w/o a disclaimer.

Note to the media: Face it, sometimes one party really can be more corrupt than the other. The old saying about absolute power corrupting absolutely is true.

27. That's right, but walking that tightrope is impossible without being
false. The repukes are corrupt and the Dems are pointing that out. There's just no real equality there and it sounds false (and it is inaccurate) to try to make it equal. I'm disappointed in the tone that this article begins with.

26. Especially when it is just spin, people may be starting to see
what is real and what is spin. I hope so, but I am tired to death of hearing the spin. I never know what to expect from the NYTimes anymore, it's such a mixed bag. I just couldn't read any further after this paragraph.

7. *snarf*
For all the Republicans' bullishness, much of their agenda has clearly fallen by the wayside, at least for now, notably Mr. Bush's attempt to overhaul Social Security. And Democrats, emboldened, say Republicans underestimate their vulnerabilities.

17. just imagine an admin. constantly needing to reassure its LIBERAL base
i just can't imagine a liberal administration ever being as completely dismissive of the opposition as this one is. whenever they have problems, their solution is to go do something hardcore for their base.

if any hypothetical liberal administration were to have a 'brutal political month', it would need to reach out to the middle/right and forge some bipartisan agreement in order to regain its footing.

And until Diebold is out of the voting business, repugs will always win.
