Peter Jennings leaves estate of over $50 million
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=765&e=6&u=/nm/20051001/people_nm/jennings_dc

NEW YORK (Reuters) - ABC News anchor Peter Jennings, who died of lung cancer in August, left an estate valued at more than $50 million, most of which was willed to his fourth wife and to two children from a previous marriage.

Jennings, 67, signed the will on April 21, 2005, 16 days after announcing on his World news Tonight program he had been diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer. He died on August 7 in New York.

His will, filed for probate this week in New York's Surrogate Court, lists $50 million in personal property and $3.5 million in property in New York.

Besides leaving his widow, producer Kayce Freed, 50 percent of the "net marital estate," she also got their Central Park West apartment.

:wow:

That's a lot of money :eyes:

4. Likely saving and investing.
Contrary to popular belief, a large income is not the key criteria to becoming wealthy, though I'm sure Peter pulled in decent money, but the key is to save and invest.

10. Sure, it is.
He literally made MILLIONS a year in salary; it would take no time at all to build up a fortune like that.

You HAVE to make that kind of money to have that much money when you die; "saving and investing" won't make the average person anywhere near rich.

13. Reportedly, $10 million a year

Contrary to Republican propaganda, hard work pays the bills, but it does not make you rich.

11. Television anchors are basically considered entertainers,
and they are paid salaries commensurate with those of the highest paid entertainers.

$5 to $10 million a year isn't unheard of.

12. Katie Couric - 4 years, $60 million
Today Show co-host, Katie Couric, received a record amount for a news person on TV when she signed her new contract last week.

Couric will receive at least $60 million over 4 years under her new contract. That is considerably more than any other on-air personality on the morning shows, and any of the serious news anchors of the evening news.

19. Local anchors don't pull down a bad salary either....
particularly those in larger markets such as Chicago, NYC, LA and even St Louis. I don't think anyone on Channels 2, 4, and 5 in St Louis are on welfare that's for sure.

16. This is why these journalist lie. There is big bucks in it.
I know little about Jennings. I don't know if he routinely lied for the administration, but with money like this floating around, is it any wonder why they lie for the administration?

27. Or at least why they don't push the envelope...
when a person has a lot to lose, especially money, prestige and access, hard or unpleasant truths get shoved further and further into the shadows.

"News" becomes obsessions with dead popes, dead girls in Aruba, etc...

A close look at who paid him all those millions will explain why Jennings helped oversee the return of the robber barons. Benign neglect.

21. "integrity is for paupers"
so saith Tim Russert, maybe Jennings took his advice.

“You know, Tim, you used to be such a rabid Democrat when you worked for Pat Moynihan,” said the executive. “But now that you’ve gotten a glimpse of who’s handing out the money in this business, you’ve become quite the Jaycee. Were you wrong about everything you used to believe so strongly?”

“I still believe,” Russert said, leaning across the table. “I believe in everything I ever did. But I also know that I never would have become moderator on Meet The Press if my employers were uncomfortable with me. And, given the amount of money at stake, millions of dollars, I don’t blame them. This is business.”

The executive agreed. “But are you concerned about losing yourself? You know, selling out?”

Russert pounded the table. “Integrity is for paupers!”

22. didn't he go to Bohemia Grove and the
Council on Foreign Relations? I'm sure he kept lots of secrets instead of telling the world what horrible things were happening. According to Louise Hay and you can heal your life, cancer is the physical response to deep secrets or grief eating at the self. Carrying hatreds.

26. I'm just waiting for one of our more "fortunate" members to tell us...
we lack proper perspective on this, that it REALLY isn't that much. After all, "everyone" in Manhattan these days is a millionaire of at least some kind or other; you can't "survive" in the city without that kind of money!
