Church may penalize PM for same-sex marriage law (might refuse communion)

Prime Minister Paul Martin may have to pay a spiritual price for leading the charge to legalize same-sex marriage in Canada.

Deciding whether politicians who support laws that contravene church teachings should still be allowed to take communion is one of the subjects up for discussion when Roman Catholic bishops gather for the synod at the Vatican.

"Some receive Communion while denying the teachings of the Church or publicly supporting immoral choices in life, such as abortion, without thinking that they are committing an act of grave personal dishonesty and causing scandal," the document continues, issuing anyone who gives such people their vote a similar rebuke.

(Rev. Thomas Collins)"A bishop's role is not to forbid communion to people -- that's a sad necessity that may unfortunately from time to time occur," he said, but only after much fasting, prayer and encouragement for the politician to repent and change.

The Roman Catholic Church has already made clear its displeasure with Canada's new marriage law. The day after its passage in July, the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano reported, "The distortion of God's plan for the family continues. In Canada, homosexual unions have become equal to marriage."

Our Ukrainian Catholic church was a lot better - we got cubes of home-made paska (holy bread) dipped in very strong wine - almost like a good whiskey!

And on special holy days, we would get some more bread upon leaving the church.

The priest's wife always made it - a nice "babushka" headed old lady! (our newest priest has a very pretty young blonde wife and two beautiful little girls!)

I always loved our communion as opposed to the Roman Catholic brand.

VANCOUVER (CP) - Prime Minister Paul Martin said Friday he separates his privately held Roman Catholic beliefs from his duties as a politician, despite the apparent threat he could lose access to the sacrament of communion for his government's stand on same-sex marriage.

Catholic bishops meeting in Vatican City at the first synod led by newly anointed Pope Benedict XVI are expected to consider refusing communion to politicians who pass laws that violate church doctrine. "I am a practising Catholic, in fact I am a strong Catholic," Martin said at a news conference with visiting Mexican President Vicente Fox.

"But I am also a legislator and I believe in the separation of church and state."

Martin said his responsibility as prime minister was to uphold Canadians' rights as defined by the courts and to take the widest possible perspective into account.
