New group looks to steer Ohio legislature past guns, God

Sunday, September 25, 2005

Columbus - When state senators took up the idea of supercharged "covenant" marriages backed by the Christian Coalition last week, Stuart Garson's blood boiled.

Only two days earlier, state representatives down the hall took testimony on another hot-button issue: concealed-handgun laws...

Fall floor sessions, which often resume in early September, are now on hold until October despite a smoldering state investment scandal, ongoing federal and state investigations into associated wrongdoing, and the criminal conviction on ethics charges of Republican Gov. Bob Taft.

"People are sick and tired of this do-nothing legislature. If you're going to pander on guns and God, you're not addressing the issues that are critical to this state," said Garson, a longtime Cleveland attorney...

1. Great news!
Stuart Garson is an incredibly intelligent and passionate Dem. I'm glad to see him stepping out front.

5. Wonder how many guns God owns or needs????
They seem to run together so I figure it is one of God's main issues....Thou shall kill and all...

12. Matters concerning the constituency of the pulpits...
... should be left to the pastors of their flocks. The Ohio Legislature is not a Sunday School.

3. Ohio is a very interesting state to watch
seems like a groundswell of discontent with the current powers that be.

4. It's a start. But the Democrats need to....
get more people and resources involved. We need to win big in Ohio next fall.

"Sen. Dan Brady, a Cleveland Democrat, for example, recently cast across-the-board no' votes in committee on all of Taft's normally benign gubernatorial appointments."

That's how I feel. Vote against the GOP right and left in protest of their actions.

14. We're getting the HELL out of here too soon
Hubby got a great job offer in Europe, so we'll be selling this house in suburban Bu$hBot hell and buying a place on the East Coast.

Now I know why my Dad (a New Yawker) moved us out of here in 1972!!! Egads, this state is a disaster (at least south of Columbus) Did I mention the horrible RE taxes?

8. If they'd get elections away from Diebold & ES&S, they'd be able
to clean house. And if they could get some REAL news, without the rightwing republican slant, then maybe the entire government could start getting back to business.

I'm so frikkin' sick of republican's "issues" I could puke! :puke:

People who HATE government, shouldn't be allowed to hold public office. And everyone knows the republicans hate our government, and are trying to undermine it at every turn.

9. The pre-election electioneering is what did us in
Blackwell conspired to make it impossible for some people to vote. That's where the story is.

10. After all that's happened to the communities in Ohio
Edited on Sun Sep-25-05 07:37 PM by depakid
as well as the widespread GOP corruption there- the fact that so many of these people keep voting Republican tells me that they're never going to learn and that a good many of them deserve what they get.

11. That "deserve what they get" comment might make sense IF
we could even be sure that "so many of these people keep voting Republican."

How can we know, when the election system is so corrupt? Besides which, should those of us who didn't vote Republican have to suffer along with those who did?

Rather than blame Ohioans for voting Republican, and implying that they are just stupid people who will never learn, maybe the time is right for some group like this to get out there and say "If you're tired of politicians pushing Ohioans' alleged pro-Christian, pro-gun, anti-abortion, anti-gay marriage hotbuttons in order to get elected...come join us as we push for an alternative focus on REAL issues that affect most people in the state every day. You know, things like unemployment...the state of the public schools...etc."

I for one am glad to see it.
