Bush vows 'biggest relief effort'
President George W Bush has promised the US government will do and spend whatever it takes to rebuild the hurricane-hit Gulf Coast.

Speaking from New Orleans, Mr Bush said billions of dollars would be spent on the reconstruction - "an unprecedented response to an unprecedented crisis".

The BBC's Claire Marshall said it was a surreal scene as Mr Bush stood in a deserted Jackson Square, in an empty city, addressing millions of people via the airwaves.

"Throughout the area hit by the hurricane, we will do what it takes. We will stay as long as it takes to help citizens rebuild their communities and their lives," Mr Bush said.

5. Day late and a dollar short.
Sorry, Bushboy. It's a little late to put your finger in the dike now. The levee's already broke.

I could be happy about all the jobs this is going to create, except for the fact you've done away with federal minimum wage requirements. Now, your cronies will make even more money off the backs of the laboring masses. Seems like somebody wrote this story before. I don't remember it having a good ending for the rich, or the poor. God, Bushie! I wish you'd read.

9. I have some advice for those who will be paid less than prevailing wage.
Anyone who will be working on this rebuilding effort, and by working I mean those who actually have to take a shower every day after work, should learn and use two very important words: SLOW DOWN.

Bush says they will pay as long as it takes so lets make it take a long time. Yes, it will mean more money for the crony contractors because of the cost-plus arrangement but they will get all of our money anyway. At least this way people getting Wal-Marted won't have to sweat quite as much.

10. " convincing performance"??
"The president needs to put in a *convincing performance* to counter falling approval ratings, the BBC's Justin Webb in Washington says. "

God forbid they should actually do some real work. Anyway, no time for putting together and carrying out intelligent plans, we're too busy spinning the hell out of everything.

When the pistol shot gets fired into the air . . . who will be first to claim "unprecedented response" $$$$$$$$$$$$$ ?

Dumbya "plan" sounds more like the Oklahoma "homestead" land rush than a domestic "Marshall Plan" similar to President Harry S Truman and Secretary of State George C. Marshall circa 1947 Dammit, why can't Dumbya do things as Democrats do things? Sheesh. Can you envision it about one year down the road? More failure.

13. related: Battered Bush in pledge to rebuild, whatever the cost
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,23889-1782836,00.html

excerpt:

White House aides, briefing reporters before last night’s speech, said that Mr Bush would not put an exact figure on the rebuilding effort. But the final cost is expected to exceed $200 billion (£111 billion) within a year, roughly the same amount spent by the US in Iraq over the past three years, and dwarfing the cost of previous natural disasters.

In excerpts released before the speech, Mr Bush said the rebuilding would be “one of the largest reconstruction efforts the world has ever seen”, adding: “Federal funds will cover the great majority of the costs.

“We will do what it takes, we will stay as long as it takes, to help citizens rebuild their communities and their lives,” he pledged. “There is no way to imagine America without New Orleans, and this great city will rise again.”

<snip>

The President’s television address came as polls showed that the hurricane had severely eroded support for the Iraq war and his leadership. White House strategists evidently calculate that the only way to regain public support after the initial disastrous response to Katrina is to spend whatever it takes to rebuild the region.

We all know how this will be paid for:

TAX CUTS FOR THE RICH!

an ignominious utter, embarassing scam that someone will have to responsibly deal with after he's gone. How could it be any different?
