DoD Announces Recruiting and Retention Numbers for August

The Department of Defense announced today its recruiting and retention statistics by the active and reserve components for the month of August.

Active duty recruiting. The Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force met or exceeded its recruiting goals in August.

Active duty retention. All services met or exceeded their overall retention goals for August and are projected to meet their retention goals for the current fiscal year.

Reserve forces recruiting. Three of the six reserve components, Marine Corps Reserve, Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve, met or exceeded their August recruiting goals. The Navy Reserve numbers are unavailable due to system failures as a result of Hurricane Katrina.

Reserve forces retention. For August, Army National Guard retention was 103 percent of the cumulative goal of 29,472, and Air National Guard retention was 108 percent of its cumulative goal of 9,307. Losses in all reserve components in July were within acceptable limits. Indications are that trend continued into August. Attrition remains quite low in the Marine Corps Reserve and the Air Force Reserve.

8. From what I am able to gather, the Army's original annual goal was 80,000.

The Army has 64,663 current accessions through August 2005. So that means they are short 15,337. There is no way they can get that many people in September. Even if they were bringing in the same number of people for September (their FY ends 30 September) that they have in August that will leave them about 6,000 short. They will probably be short about 8,000 considering September is historically not as big a month as August for recruiting. So they will end the year about 10% short.

The Army's guard and reserve are doing even worse.
