Bush Approval Rating at All-Time Low

By Richard Morin
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, September 12, 2005; 5:31 PM

President Bush's public standing has hit record lows amid broad support for an independent investigation of the federal response to Hurricane Katrina and calls for postponing congressional action on $70 billion in proposed tax cuts to help pay for storm recovery, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

President Bush's overall job approval rating now stands at 42 percent, the lowest of his presidency and down three points since Hurricane Katrina savaged the Gulf Coast two weeks ago. Fifty-seven percent disapprove of Bush's performance, a double-digit increase since January.

Bush's handling of Iraq and terrorism also have never been lower, according to the poll. Thirty-eight percent approve of the way Bush is handling the situation in Iraq and half the county now approve of the way Bush is handling the campaign against terrorism.

-snip-
The survey found that 76 percent of the public favors an investigation of federal storm response efforts by an independent commission similar to the one that probed the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The proposal drew strong bipartisan support: 64 percent of all Republicans and 83 percent of Democrats favored creating the independent panel.

2. I heard 38%, I tend to agree it's lower than 42%. He still hasn't fired
anyone and he's still more worried about his poll numbers then doing what a leader does, lead. He's never been a leader and will never be one, time to boot his butt back to the cowboy ranch.

14. WaPo polls are almost always about 4 points higher
on approval than most polls - hence 38 percent.

21. Just this morning I saw a poll that had it at 39%
At least 3 out of 5 Americans are telling the pollsters the same thing.

3. "64 percent of all Republicans" smell the 2006 elections coming.
Other than that, I find it hard...bordering on impossible...to believe that a single one of them gives a rat's ass about creating an "independent commission similar to the one that probed the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks."

It's their own special little way of distancing themselves from the Emperor's sinking numbers without offering direct criticism.

4. Considering who did the poll... this is very good news...
I figure anything done by the Washington Post is heavily skewed towards the Right.

5. What % of the public are African American's considered?
A total of 1,200 randomly selected adults, including an oversample of 200 African-Americans, were interviewed Sept. 8-11 for this survey.

6. African Americans are approximately 13% of the population
Last I heard. This poll sampled them at 16.6%, a moderate oversample.

7. ABC's earlier article dubbed the lower approval "relatively stable"
From earlier today-

The full results of the poll will be available at 5 p.m.

Overall, 54 percent disapprove of the way Bush is handling the post-Katrina situation; 44 percent approve. Since the last ABC/Post poll, disapproval is up by seven points while approval is relatively stable (it was 46 percent); today fewer are undecided about the job Bush is doing in this area. These numbers continue to reflect a deep partisan divide: Seven in 10 Republicans approve of the president's performance, compared to only 22 percent of Democrats.

11. This is a very corporate poll, so I view this as good news
That should put to rest the hand wringing over today's Gallup poll of 46%.

12. Gallup SHOULD Be Ashamed of Their Latest Poll
But they aren't.

They are unabashed whores.

ABC/WP poll is usually right up there with Gallup in their skewing.

18. I think it's a lot lower. My Fundie Repub officemate spun around and said
"And where are those tax cuts Bush promised us?" after I had been marveling at how much my state and federal taxes had gone up on my paycheck stub.

Some of these people are going to be very angry as it sinks in...another dam is about to break.
