Bush links hurricane, Sept. 11 attacks
--------------
Published Friday, September 9, 2005
--------------
WASHINGTON (AP) - President George W. Bush, linking hurricane recovery and the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks four years ago, declared today that the nation was ready to "overcome any challenge."

"America is a strong and resilient nation," Bush said.

(snip)

Today, he spoke about the hurricane at the swearing-in for Karen Hughes, the Department of State’s new undersecretary for public diplomacy - a post designed to lift America’s image abroad to help win the war on terror.

Bush said that more than 100 nations had offered help after the hurricane, and he compared that to "a similar outpouring of support when another tragedy struck our nation" - the 2001 attacks in New York and Washington.

His speech marked the first of several steps in which the White House is seeking to intertwine the challenge of the anti-terror battle with the effort to recover from the hurricane.

"Bush links hurricane, Sept. 11 attacks"

edit for accuracy and to add that the bush main quality is the ability to take a disaster and make it exponentially worse.

58. Jon Stewert had it first...
He said they were going to build a new levee/dam in Arkansas, because it was better to fight/stop the water over there then here at the coast...the bush team must have liked the idea and now are going to go with the "terrorist" routine.

He must be cracking if he thought it was a good idea to remind people that his willful incompetence is a pattern.

And who is he kidding? An Office of Public Diplomacy (BS Propaganda) will not make people stop hating us for killing their families. It would probably be more effective to stop killing their families.

57. But sorry assed responses add $$$ to the fear bank account. And
that is all that matters to them.

The fear that comes from Hurricane Katrina will be doled out in various doses to separate people from one another..oh wait - it didn't happen the way it was supposed to... and after they waited for days for a good long cycle of lawlessness...:sarcasm:

There's a lot (perhaps to many) Americans that want to hear cliches; short brief clauses without any substance at all.

Bush is not talking to you or I but to his 'base' of supporters.

Somethings are out of bounds and until today I thought that that was in forever the case with 9/11. This has to be a joke. Really it has to be...only W would think that he had been told that he could get away with it.

Hopefully (wishful thinking on my part) people will connect the two and see how dangerously incompetent and negligent this junta is.

20. There certainly is a connection between the decimation of NO
and 9/11. Bush and the neo-cons presided over both -- both were a utter failure of intelligent leadership and foresight. As my young daughter lamented a few days ago: "Everything seems to have gone wrong since Bush became President."

one of my neighbors told me after 9/11 that Bush never had a chance to prove himself before disaster struck and that's why we shouldn't fault him. to my way of thinking, 9/11 and now Katrina were perfect chances for Bush to not just PROVE himself but to be a good president. What lame reasoning.

Georgie, you were useless when this nation was attacked by terrorists on 9/11/2001 (though I, like you, enjoyed the story about the pet goat), and you were totally, shamefully useless when the hurricane hit and killed many tens of thousands of Americans. You are, quite simply, USELESS.

34. Yah. I think everyone's calling it right.
To link this clusterfuck to 9-11 is to poison what little positive association he might otherwise be able to wring out of his bullhorn scene. Pretty soon the press is gonna start re-examining his performance back then, and begin noticing things that they passed over the first time around. Things like how he was flying around the country from one hdey-hole to the next, and how it took him 3 days to show up in NY. Those tricks only work when your teflon is intact, and his no longer is. He has become damaged goods.

66. that's because you're a logical person!
he is not, so i'm guessing that is how he is thinking.

all the news reports have been saying how 9/11 showed his strength, while i scratch my head, going 'what the fuck!?' but if he believes that he did a great job, my guess is that he would bring that up as a reminder. us logical and cynical ones don't buy it, though.

maybe part of it, too, is that 9/11 is coming up, and all 'celebrations' of it are being clouded. this is all speculation on my part.

I think that's exactly what he's thinking, and the clouding of the "celebrations" is a great point. I mean, 9/11 is their annual showcase, and now its been marred by all those selfish hurricane victims. (:sarcasm:)

i think it will backfire. people are too ired right now. they are barely listening to what he says. i don't think there is anything he can say right now to change how people feel about him, to undo the damage he inflicted upon himself. this is snowballing into his demise. there is no going backwards at this point.

45. September 11th was the greatest day in Bush's miserable life
That disaster is Bush's shining moment, his triumph in getting people to look away from his pitiful excuse for intelligent leadership and focus on a tragedy that brought us all together for a brief moment in time. He's been coming back fondly to 9/11 through every trouble spot in his Presidency and milking it ever since.

61. Here's Takebackthemedia.com's
Bush Magic 8 Ball which he used to use only to divine what to do in Iraq, now it appears to have more uses..

Grab it with your cursor, give it a shake to get Bush's answer.

68. Does he want us to believe Saddam or Iran or North Korea
caused the hurricane now? I know that sounds crazy, but so do all his other cockamany theories.

78. Mindy Kleinberg, 43 Lorie Van Auken, 50 ("How sad that for four years)
"Nine/11 should have been the wake-up call that we needed in order
to shift our focus, and it wasn't," said Mindy Kleinberg, 43, of
East Brunswick, whose husband, Alan, died in the attacks four years ago today.
"How sad that for four years we've had homeland security on the table, and we
don't have a definite plan in any state for what to do in the event of a catastrophe?

"It doesn't really matter whether the disaster is natural or terror-driven, it's
the same kind of plan that you need, and the command structure needs to be set up
so that there's a go-to person," added Kleinberg.

"The right fix is to fire the person who led to 3,000 people dying by making
bad calls," Van Auken said. "That is the right fix. We have the wrong fixes
in place."

"We fought for the commission so we could have a full accounting of how
the attacks could have happened and why they weren't prevented,"
Breitweiser said. "This goes to show that all of our efforts and energies
trying to make the nation safer by having the independent commission give
a full accounting to the American people were futile."

"There are no words to describe our disappointment in our personal
sacrifice getting that commission up and running and in the promises that
were made to us that we would have the real 9/11 story told," Van Auken
said. "None of that has come to pass and that is very sad."
