GOP to seek eavesdropping money from insurer Sept. 22

A hearing has been set for Sept. 22 in the Republican Party of Virginia's lawsuit saying its insurance company should have covered what the party paid to settle the legal case arising from eavesdropping on two phone calls among Democratic legislators.

Lawyers for the Republican Party have asked Dohnal to make the insurer pay; lawyers for the company, Union Insurance Co. of Nebraska, want the case dismissed.

The current suit stems from the eavesdropping scandal in which two executives of the state GOP listened in on two Democratic Party conference calls in March 2002.

Democrats sued, claiming their privacy had been violated. Last December, Democrats and Republicans settled out of court. The GOP agreed to pay $750,000 in damages.

They'll insure you against getting caught when you commit crimes. If you don't get caught, they get a cut of the action.
