German conservative links Katrina to US CO2 policy

BERLIN, Sept 1 (Reuters) - A German conservative policymaker said on Thursday climate change had played a role in Hurricane Katrina and urged the U.S. to join other nations in cutting the carbon dioxide emissions blamed for global warming.

Gerda Hasselfeldt, a leading candidate to become environment minister if the conservative opposition wins next month's election, was asked in an interview with n-tv television if climate change had contributed to the devastation wrought by the storm on the U.S. Gulf Coast in which thousands may have died.

"That is the case," she replied, adding that there should be better coordination at the global level to achieve a further reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.

"The U.S. must be more involved. But we will not achieve that through insults," Hasselfeldt said.

4. Unfuckungbeliveable
A conservative follows in the footsteps of Trittin

And with the same rhetoric. While it is clear that global warming lead to more and stronger hurricanes statistically, it is just plain stupid
to fix it to one special hurricane regardless how shortsighted the BFEE is.

This is no longer a scientific debate it's a war of words.

And the other side is even more stupid and completely disregarding the danger of global warming.

If it didn't happen during such a catastrophe, it would be funny.

5. Yes, agreed. A single hurricane is not the result of global warming.

Was Camille also a result of global warming?

However, the increasing quantity of hurricanes, and each hurricane's strength, *could* be considered correlated to global warming. The scary thing is, there may still be a number of additional hurricanes still to come this season.

7. Actually, MANY additional and more powerful hurricanes ARE
a result of global Warming. There's little debate here in Florida that warmer sea temps turn tropical depressions into killer hurricanes; the only real debate now is between those that say the warmer temperatures are due to a "natural cycle", and those (more independent and informed) scientists who say that global warming is the cause. The effects of global warming surged dramatically in the early 90's due to increased industry, deforestation, and the popularity of SUVs.

8. Hey, I agree. The pattern is obvious... and the cause peer-reviewed.

I was just agreeing with the previous poster that a statement like "Katrina was caused by global warming" wasn't the strongest position... since hurricanes existed before the Industrial Revolution.

6. A bit of a circular argument - but
Life on Earth was caused by global warming.
