Thousands could lose jobs by Christmas if Schwarzenegger acts
State Workers Facing Layoffs
Davis signed off on $1.1 billion in payroll cuts, but he has made few. Thousands could lose jobs by Christmas if Schwarzenegger acts.
By Jeffrey l. Rabin, Times Staff Writer

It's one more item on the list of state budget headaches that Arnold Schwarzenegger is inheriting: To keep the current year's budget in balance, the new governor may need to lay off thousands of state workers — just in time for Christmas.

Edit ...
Schwarzenegger is to be sworn in as governor in mid-November. If he issues the required 30-day notices of layoffs right away, workers will lose their jobs during the holiday season. If he delays, more workers will have to be cut to accumulate the required savings by June 30, the end of the fiscal year. Already, a quarter of the fiscal year is gone, and the state is nowhere near its target for payroll reductions.

Edit ...
During the campaign, Schwarzenegger said one way he would cut spending would be to renegotiate pay and benefit packages for state workers. One of the planks in his 10-point plan for his first 100 days in office calls for him to "renegotiate state employee union contracts to get better deal for taxpayers." He has provided no details.

He wants to bankrupt all goverments so he doesn't have to pay taxes. Check out what's happening in Alabama. Chaos is not far behind.

12. Did Schwarzenegger actually lie?
According to the article, Schwarzenegger said that he would renegotiate state worker contracts during his campaign. The article does not indicate whether or not he ever promised he would not layoff state employees.

I have to admit that I also have a hard time feeling sorry for those Californians who voted for Schwarzenegger. While I can understand their frustration with Davis, I can not understand why they decided to replace him with the inexperienced and unqualified Schwarzenegger. They could have easily selected a more qualified candidate from the large list of people who were running for office.

33. I am sorry about your bf
I also hope that the state workers do fight back. I find it unfortunate that many people tend to view state workers as lazy and overpaid.

However, I get tired of state employees in my home state (Nevada)who buy into the myth of the lazy and overpaid state employee. I have gotten into numerous debates with state employees who advocate voting for conservative candidates because these candidates will "lower their taxes" and cut "wasteful" government spending. When I remind these people that taxes pay their salaries, they still argue that cutting taxes is a good idea. They honestly believe that if Nevada has to layoff government workers, they will not be the ones who lose their jobs because they are the "good" workers. Instead, it will be the "bums" who lose their jobs.

6. losing hope
I gotta say, Arnold winning this election despite all the potential adverse effects has really made me begin to lose hope. Are people really so blind? This is a big loss for California and a big win for corporations and the Bush Administration. Do the Democrats really have a chance to win in 2004? I have my doubts when there is no system in place to accurately monitor elections given the use of the new touch screen system. I'm trying to remain positive, but after the last presidential election, 911, and now the recall I have my worries. These issues have become very divisive in our society with arguments flaring among co-workers and family members. I'd like to think things can change. How do people here on DU keep a positive outlook in the face of so much controversy and keep it from negatively impacting their relationships with others? Can we fight back without being seen as being aggressive or hostile to one another?

7. welcome to DU
:toast:

it is very difficult with all that is going on that is for sure.

i try to look for humor, and i am so glad franken and moore are out there as well as others but especially the folks on the internet - thank gore he invented the internet - and here on du.

when i talk to conservatives i try to bring up topics that i know every american would have a problem with like our rights and our money they usually are smpathetic to those concerns.

try not to rant unless you are front of the choir like du. it works great to vent here than go out and act concerned but above the fray.

i noticed i talking bush doll at my work on friday, the one where you pull his string and it plays back one of his numerous gaffs and the cool thing is my company is very pro bush - owners and management.

i have some funny pictures and interesting mp3s that might cheer you up at http://news.GlobalFreePress.com

14. I have hope because of history...
...think of the life of a coal miner in the 19th century. Working incredible hours in life-threatening conditions.

Through strikes, journalism, picket lines, demonstrations - this was changed. Same for getting the 40-hour week and outlawing child labor, as well as getting blacks and females the vote.

It was done then, and we can do it again.

Hang in there. Just keep fightin' the fight!

15. Don't lose hope, my friend. I'll share my secret with you. Psssst.....

Been following this trainwreck that our country has become since the Kennedy assasinations and one thing that has been apparent from then to now is that we are being kept fat, dumb and happy with fast foods, network television, and designer drugs, until we are a nation whose citizens no longer know enough about the way the world works to have any chance of changing things. Bread and circuses.

The one bright spot in our favor is the internet and the communities that are growing there. More people are getting their news exclusively from the internet, and more campaigns are being run, at least in part, from the internet. This is for the first time building a true grass roots movement amoung those who care to participate. Will this be enough to bring progressives back to power? I don't know. But I think it almost doesn't matter. Here's why:

A second bush term will result in my opinion in the destruction of the republican party as it exists today. I remember the republicans of my youth and I remember that they were truly conservatives. By that I mean that if you're going to spend to do something, you first figure out how to pay for it. And you keep the gov'ts nose out of the private lives of the citizens. We could use some of that again.

I think the results of this will be so bad that the people, like the frenchmen in 1789 and the russians in 1917, will no longer put up with them, and take their gov't back in any way they can. I know that this sounds quite extreme, but as a mind experiment it comes in handy. And I have come to believe that this will be the only way that the United States of America will survive.

I believe that life after the Second American Revolution will be much better for most people because it will be based on citizenship extended only to corporial biological bipedal flesh and blood people, and not to artificial entities such as corporations.

Anyway, that's how I maintane hope. I know that long run or short run, we win. In the short run, if we win the 04 election in spite of BBV, great. But we still have a lot to change and a lot to rebuild. If we lose the next election, that's ok. The bush rush to destruction is inevitable and unstoppable. And we wind up with a great place to live, anyway.

So cheer up. Karma is your friend. It has a way of raising up the good, and inserting large object in uncomfortable orifices of the bad. Don't you just love it?

26. thank you
so much for the words of encouragement! I am so happy to have found this site. It is comforting to know there are others out there who feel that things are a little off course in this country. I know it would be wrong to give up, I'm just a little disappointed in the recent setback with the recall election. For a moment I had hoped things were finally turning around. In any event I like how Al Franken put it at the end of his book:
"We have to fight them with the truth. Our added entertainment value will have to come from being funny and attractive. And passionate. And idealistic. But also smart."

Thankfully, I always find those qualities here.

Nothing else makes sense to me. Now, the morons of CA who fell for spin regarding this election, or were electronically 'guided' toward same (despite numerous media postings warning of computerized voting machine potential for massive voter FRAUD when using these machines), can eat their own excrement when THE TERMINATOR eats its own.
