Army Planning Four More Years in Iraq Is `Folly,' Senator Says

Aug. 21 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. Army's worst-case scenario plan of keeping more than 100,000 soldiers in Iraq through 2009 is ``folly,'' said Chuck Hagel, a Republican member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

``There's no way America is going to have 100,000 troops in Iraq, nor should it in four years,'' Hagel said on ABC's ``This Week.'' ``It would bog us down. It would further destabilize the Middle East.''

Hagel, a Nebraska Republican who has been critical of the war, said comments about troop levels in Iraq by General Peter Schoomaker, the Army chief of staff, to the Associate Press yesterday were ``complete folly.''

``I don't know where he is going to get these troops,'' Hagel said.

This is "faith based" military planning.
A "higher being" will reach down and "create" the troops when they are needed.

2. A strong argument could be made the entire RW PNAC agenda is folly,
by golly, yet the Congress will likely continue to fund all these follies.

3. I can assure you that that argument was made.
Here, and well before the invasion started.

4. I'll tell you where BushCo will get the troops
The draft. And I would be a doughnut that wealthy eligible Republicans find a way to buy their way out. As usual.

5. Yes, their setting up LOCAL draft boards makes me question
how fair the new system will be if it is put into force. Why local draft boards? Surely the Feds have enough information on everyone in this age of computers not to have to rely on local boards as they did in times past. I fear they will be used to find loopholes for those well-connected.

Same old story: rich man's war, poor man's fight.

7. NOW:
where are their accountants? What about the Congressional Budget office? How are we going to pay for 4 more years? Where is the money going to come from?

From China? From Japan?

Mr. Hagel is missing the point. He says it would "bog us down". There isn't any money to do this for 4 more years. We're technically broke, right now.

The war in Iraq and Afghanistan has not been paid for. In fact, it's all borrowed from the future.
