MD: Coretta Scott King Had `big Stroke'

ATLANTA (AP) -- Coretta Scott King suffered a heart attack and a major stroke that has impaired her ability to speak and affected her right side, a doctor said Thursday.

Dr. Charles Wickliffe, a cardiologist at Piedmont Hospital, where the widow of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. has been hospitalized since Tuesday, said both the heart attack and stroke were caused by a blood clot from the heart that lodged in an artery in the left side of her brain.

''This same clot caused a small heart attack and a big stroke,'' the doctor said.

King, 78, was listed in fair condition Thursday.

The stroke caused weakness in King's right arm, her right leg and the right side of her face, and she is not able to speak, Wickliffe said. He said he expected she would remain in the hospital for days to come and would need intensive therapy....

8. I do hope this great American woman recovers.
She has been through too much not to. Bu$h used her a year or so ago, during a visit to Atlanta, and she obviously did not like it. Has he chimed in on this dear woman's illness yet? What says the President about the illness of the wife of the man that freed much of America to enjoy democracy (like he spits it out about Iraq)?

16. Coretta Scott King Is Mostly Paralyzed
Coretta Scott King Is Mostly Paralyzed

Saturday August 20, 2005 3:16 AM

By KRISTEN WYATT

Associated Press Writer

ATLANTA (AP) - Coretta Scott King is mostly paralyzed on the right side of her body and faces a long, difficult recovery from a stroke, but she managed to say a few words Friday, her doctor said.

Dr. Maggie Mermin, King's personal physician, said that the 78-year-old widow of Martin Luther King Jr. is unable to walk and has been mostly unable to speak since the stroke Tuesday in the left side of her brain, which controls speech functions.

``She said a few words today. We're very encouraged by that,'' the doctor said.

Mermin said King would be in Piedmont Hospital for at least another week and said, ``I'm not certain she'll have full recovery. ... We certainly hope for that.''

18. In an age of sad news every day....
this is the saddest news I've received in awhile. I am reminded of all she has seen and had to endure in her life, and the strength that was needed to make it through, and I am in awe.

23. Coretta Scott King, Cindy Sheehan's mom, and Harry Reid....
All suffering from strokes....this is very sad.

What would be even sadder is for DUers to try to link them all together into some conspiracy theory, so please don't do it.
