Gonzalez files FOIA lawsuit against DOJ over Texas flap
Gonzalez files FOIA lawsuit against DOJ over Texas flap

Rep. Charlie Gonzalez has turned to the courts in his effort to force the Department of Justice to detail its possible role in tracking Democratic Texas state legislators who fled the state in May.

Gonzalez (D-Texas), a former state judge, and Diana Salgado, an official with the state Democratic Party, filed the suit July 8 under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).
“We’ve gone through all the channels, all the procedures,” Gonzalez said Monday. “And we believe we’re being stonewalled. Every department has a process — you record things.”

By using the courts “we can get the information straight from the source, where we can place under oath,” Gonzalez said.

Yesterday, U.S. District Judge Royal Furgeson, a Clinton appointee, held the first hearing in the case, where Gonzalez’s counsel planned to ask for early discovery of evidence.

“I think the government is going to have a difficult time making clear why they should withhold this information,” David Vladeck, a professor at the Georgetown University Law Center, said.

5. Did everyone see this?
DeLay prompts new FAA rules

Republican Rep. Tom DeLay's use of the Federal Aviation Administration to track down a Texas lawmaker resisting GOP redistricting plans has led the FAA to introduce new rules to restrict such inquiries. The rules, which were announced at a House Transportation Committee hearing, would forbid FAA employees from revealing the whereabouts of a plane unless the request is for an official government purpose or for safety or efficiency reasons.

6. Way to go Charlie!
Representative Charlie Gonzalez is the son of the late great Henry B. Gonzalez. He's growing into his Father's really big shoes. I loved
Henry B. May he rest in peace.

7. Henry was one of the only guys ever to take on the CIA.
He called for dismantling it. He tried to get it investigated. He worked long and hard to get some resolution to the truths he knew about the assassinations in the 60s. But he kept his focus on thing current, too. Henry was an American hero.
