Napolitano declares border emergency
Sarah Connor: What did he just say?

Gas Station Attendant: He said there's a storm coming in.

Sarah Connor: I know.

Vincente Fox: This is intolerable. We've always been good neighbors and we demand that this course of action not be taken.

Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano declared an emergency Monday in four border counties because of problems related to lax border enforcement and moved to provide local governments in those counties with up to $1.5 million in state funding.

Napolitano's order directly released $200,000 from the state's emergency fund for disasters while her emergency council released an additional $1.3 million, spokeswoman Jeanine L'Ecuyer said.

The money is intended for use by counties and municipalities for a variety of purposes, including overtime pay for law enforcement officers, repairs of border fences, costs related to illegal immigrants' deaths, L'Ecuyer said.

Napolitano's action followed by three days a similar declaration by New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson.

Arizona is the nation's busiest entry point for illegal border-crossings, and illegal immigration has emerged as a significant political issue.

Crimes and other problems associated with the border include illegal immigration, vehicle thefts, drug smuggling and property damage.

"All of this, bottom line every last bit of this, is a federal responsibility but the federal government has not done what it needs to do and has promised to do," said L'Ecuyer,

She added that the actual damage and the level of frustration compelled Napolitano to act.

1. And that's how our parties are different on illegal immigration
Republicans howl and squawk on radio talk shows making racist remarks, while Democratic governors actually do something about it.

3. And many here make it as an issue of race.

Regardless of race, the situation really is out of control.

Something needs to be done in a fair and humane fashion and it needs to be done now.

2. Arizona will save more than it is spending
because of her actions. This is not a popular decision in many quarters. I respect her for doing what she believes is right based on the facts provided her.

5. It would be a help if the employers who exploit the labors of illegals
would face serious enforcement of the laws. So long as they skate, there will be no real solution, the workers will continue to be abused, the locals in AZ will continue to have to deal with two legged coyotes playing pirates in the desert and the nation will continue to be divided.

9. I couldn't care less about illegal immigration.
It's the exploitation of immigrants, legal and illegal that I object to. Illegals are hired for low wage jobs to push the bottom wage down and companies bend the rules to bring in nurses, engineers and technicians to hold those wages down.

6. I've got a 3-point plan for stopping illegal immigration
1. freeze assets of corporations suspected of hiring illegal immigrants until the trial is held and they are exonerated
2. dissolve corporations convicted of hiring illegal immigrants and seize their assets
3. charge all holders of voting stock in corporations convicted of hiring illegal immigrants with slavery, punishable by hard time in prison.

There'd be a lot less of this snakehead garbage going on that way.

8. Yea, but who would want the police state needed for enforcement
Edited on Mon Aug-15-05 11:25 PM by nolabels
This artificial world we have in the US was also really created by corporations in truth. Mostly somehow the little guy always loses when the government makes big moves and real law enforcement is multiproged approach. No doubt going after a few big fish would send a message but at what price for the rest of us?

I would give up on the idea the US government ever worked for the little guy in the first place though. America's free enterprise system is only designed to find the cheapest way to screw the little guy with the least amount of effort.

11. eh? the only things that goes after are corporations & boards of directors
So it's not all that bad. Of course, getting rid of corporate personhood so there's personal responsibility of the boards of directors for e.g. pushing "products" that kill people etc. would hit even harder.

14. Interesting...

1. freeze assets of corporations suspected of hiring illegal immigrants until the trial is held and they are exonerated
2. dissolve corporations convicted of hiring illegal immigrants and seize their assets
3. charge all holders of voting stock in corporations convicted of hiring illegal immigrants with slavery, punishable by hard time in prison.

Yeah, there's a good idea... because our government would never use that in any less-than-honorable way. :eyes:

company and also anyone else at the company responsible for the hiring of the illegals, just like they do with drug laws. If the government did this a few times, it would throw such a scare into the scum the rest would probably stop. The people who do the hiring have $$$$$$$$$$as their biggest motive. When you seize all of their personal assets, their homes, stock, cash, cars, jewelry, furniture, etc., that makes an impression on them

15. Wasn't that ridiculous?
I 100% agree with the name change, but I think she almost sunk herself with regards to the way she went about it. Hopefully it doesn't turn around and bite her in '06.

10. "the federal government has not done what it needs to do"
Proving beyond the shadow of a doubt that the "war on terror" is a bunch of Bu*h PNAC bullshit.

Bu*h's main concern is destroying democracy in America.

13. Why was the Mountain Name change a fiasco????
As a long time Arizonan, the only problem with the name change was that it gave the Republicans something to attack Napolitano on.

To change the Mountain from "Squaw" which is an insult to the Indians, to "Piestewa," the first American Indian woman killed in a war (Iraq) was an extremely high honor to an Indian warrior.

The Republicans attempted to change every Arizona historical name to be replaced with Ronald Reagan.
