Husband of "Peace Mom" protesting in Crawford files for divorce
----------------
By The Associated Press
----------------
(8/15/05 - FAIRFIELD, CA) — The husband of Cindy Sheehan, a Vacaville mother camped outside President Bush's ranch in Texas to protest the death of a son killed while serving with U.S. forces in Iraq, has filed for divorce, according to court documents.

Patrick Sheehan filed a petition for the dissolution of his marriage Friday in Solano County Superior Court. His lawyer did not immediately return a call seeking comment Monday.
The couple's eldest child, Casey, 24, was an Army soldier killed in April 2004.

Cindy Sheehan said the stress of the death led to the separation of the couple, who were high school sweethearts. It also led her to take her activism just short of the president's door step, where she has held an anti-war demonstration for more than a week.

2. Cindy has already talked about this
it has nothing to do with her protest. They had decided this some time ago. It is very common for couples to split when they lose a child. There are huge problems with the grieving process.

Edited on Mon Aug-15-05 08:00 PM by rocknation
Between this and statement his side of the family released, it's what the RW noise machine needs to make her sound as cuckoo-bananas as Cuckoo-Bananas himself. I daresay his family is behind this.

13. I agree. I don't think much of her in-laws for speaking out against her,
either. They should have realized that Mrs. Sheehan would be asked about them & that she would point out that they hardly saw or knew her son Casey.

They come off looking like husband & relatives scorned.

I think Mrs. Sheehan has found her calling & that many doors will be opened for her in the near future as well as long after this Iraq mess is over. She's a jewel.

30. Chris Matthews asked her tonight on "Hardball" if she planned to run
for congress. She said no, that she was a one-issue person. She knew a lot about Iraq but nothing else (somehow, I doubt that very much). He told her, "You should. You know more than most congressmen."

She is clearly a jewel. And she's very likeable.

told, coerced, bribed, or otherwise "moved" to do so by, shall we say, some armpit (an asshole has a purpose, but an armpit doesn't), yep some major rovian armpit in the * admin or associated with the RW?

Another 15 min of fame, brought to you by the people who brought you the prolonged Vietnam war and its attendant profiterring, and every other "conflict," "confrontation," "military intervention," or "struggle" since then.

Everything is scripted with these guys. EVERYTHING is planned.

Sooo hoping the "plan" backfires...but good!

22. I suggest you all listen to Cindy ...
... before you go off half cocked condemning her husband. You don't have a clue. It sounds to me as though these people still love each other and support each other.

Here's Cindy ... the complete article BY HER is at:
http://www.truthout.org/cindy.html

Excerpt:

Yes, my husband has filed for divorce and yes he filed before I left for the VFP Convention and this trip to Crawford and yes IT IS BETWEEN MY HUSBAND AND I.

Having Casey murdered in Iraq by George Bush's reckless policies has been hard enough on my family, but me setting off on my holy war to bring the troops home, my constant absences, and all of the media attention has put additional stresses on my family.

I chose my path after Casey died. The rest of the family has chosen theirs. We all still love each other and support each other in anything that we do. We didn't want Casey to join the Army, but once he made that decision, we supported him and even encouraged him through boot camp.

We are a normal American family who have had good times, bad times, and terrible times. We hope the good times will come back. We hope that we will be able to laugh with abandon together like we used to one day. We hope that the troops come home and no other families have to go through what we are going through.

It isn't about politics for us. No one asked Casey what political affiliation he was before they sent him off to die in Iraq and no one asked us who we voted for in 2000 before we were handed a folded flag from Casey's flag-draped coffin.

I am not perfect and I never even claimed to be perfect. My family isn't perfect, but we are pretty special ... especially the children. We all miss Casey so much and it is George Bush and his neocon cabal who is at fault. The people who are dragging my family through the mud need to grow up and look at themselves. The Christ said: "He who is without sin, cast the first stone."

28. The media is making this an issue. And the mean-spirited are using it
as a weapon against Cindy.

It's a shame that Mr. Sheehan couldn't wait until Cindy's mission was over to file for divorce; once it's filed at the county office, it's fodder for the press. He could have been more discreet; instead, he seems to be sending a message.

I question his timing: He filed just days after his relatives, Cindy's in-laws, sent a press release in opposition to her cause. He must have known how hurtful their public dressing-down would be for Cindy because he told her on the phone that he had nothing to do with it. Days later, unfortunately, he filed a petition for divorce.

The details of their marriage are Cindy's business but what her husband did is in the public domain, and I will feel free to speculate, briefly and in passing, about what might inform such incredibly bad timing, on his part.

I don't like it when ... people say things like

...

I didn't do anything wrong, but if you DO think I did something wrong,
I seek you forgiveness.

'bla, bla', but 'bla, bla' is a private matter.

I didn't do anything wrong, but if I did, I should not be
the first person prosecuted under a new law.

...

I guess the era of 'no comment' seems to have passed.

19. Shit - &^^&$^%&&^**(&* Why couldn't he wait???

The truth of this is that the only way the RW can down play Sheehan is by making her out to be some kind of whiney liberal. Now they will use this as proof to say that her family wants nothing to do with her.

I am saying this because I heard about this story already (before I read it here) from repugs that I have to constantly debate. They are going to use this and use it and use it some more.

He should have just waited for Casey's sake.

I know that her other son wants her to come home. But one day he will understand why his mom is doing what she is doing.

33. The right wing should be careful about pushing this angle
To people with functioning empathy, this will only make matters worse for the right wing. It magnifies her loss and makes her plight even more tragic - as several people have said, the death of a child often leads to marital breakup. Bush will be seen as responsible for a death and a divorce now.

Spouse of US mom protesting Iraq war seeks divorce

Mon Aug 15, 2005 08:47 PM ET

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - The husband of Cindy Sheehan, the California woman camped outside U.S. President George W. Bush's Texas ranch to protest the war in Iraq, has filed for divorce, she said on Monday. Patrick Sheehan filed to dissolve his marriage with Cindy Sheehan on Friday, August 12, in Solano County Superior Court, according to records on the Web site of the local court in northern California.

Cindy Sheehan said in a statement that she and her husband decided to divorce before she began her encampment in Crawford, Texas. "Grief pulls families apart, but my decision to seek justice for my son's death and prevent other mothers from having this heartache has nothing to do with our decision to end our marriage," the statement said.

She said her husband supports her but "hasn't chosen a public quest for answers." Patrick Sheehan's lawyer was not immediately available for comment.

The couple's eldest son, Casey, was killed in April 2004 in Iraq while serving in the U.S. Army. His mother has emerged as a leading critic of the war in Iraq by pitching a tent near the Bush ranch and refusing to leave until he speaks to her.
