Anna's injuries may end tennis career
Anna's injuries may end tennis career

Much more of a success off the court than on it, Anna Kournikova might be making a permanent move to a life outside tennis.

Kournikova, a 22-year-old Russian, told the London Evening Standard on Monday that she plans to quit tennis early next year and devote herself to becoming an actress and TV awards presenter.

"Acting and presenting are definitely things I enjoy doing," Kournikova, who was in Monte Carlo hosting the World Music Awards, told the newspaper. "I'd love to appear in something like 'Sex and the City' or 'Friends.' I get offered lots of those sorts of jobs, but I've never had time to pursue them because of my tennis."

Kournikova was once ranked as high as eighth in the world without having won a singles title. Her best moments were reaching the Wimbledon semifinals in 1997 and winning two Grand Slam doubles championships. Her tournament appearances have been limited in recent years because of injuries to her feet and back.

1. What tennis career?
Her lousy record speaks for itself--never won a title. Came along during a slow time in women's tennis and was able to rise in the rankings ONLY because of that.

4. My thought PRECISELY!
A few years back I was at Wimbledon and watched Venus Williams play Anna, no talent, Kournikova. She was nothing but a name and a body. Get her OUT of tennis.

uh... I don't know.

At least she can find time for more photo shoots etc.

Nothing wrong with staring at her.

Nothing wrong with staring at her.

her pictures, no. Staring at her in person might seem a bit creepy

(just finished a sexual harassment training at work; I'm apparently no good at it)

6. as in any business…
Edited on Thu Oct-16-03 06:02 PM by peterh
one often looks to dump the underperforming asset(s) and focus on those that do perform. In Anna’s case, the key asset was kept in shape by the underperforming asset and I don’t believe the key asset was all that supportable anyway….bye Anna

edited for grammar

14. C'mon, without her, I would never have watched a single...
tennis match. I would never have seen the Williams-sisters.
Don't be cruel... She's so beautifull. And compared to spending 99% of your life lifting stupid weights to become the leader of California, she's a huge step forward for mankind:-)
Hello from Germany,

18. LOL
Well the Ukraine girls really knock me out
They leave the West behind
And Moscow girls make me sing and shout
That Georgia's always on my mind.

BTW, I've already apologized on behalf of the US for allowing David Hasselhoff to travel over there, haven't I? It was probably the worst security lapse during the Clinton administration...hushed up, though.

:)

19. You're more than forgiven...
well, we had some not so good experiences with an austrian political leader, who made it from a nothing kind of guy to the german leader not too long ago (the american dream, you know?). David was fun. He's ugly, doesn't have any injuries that could prevent him from doing his job and he doesn't run for president till now...
German girls between the age of 6 and 8 simply loved him. Must be really hard, if all women above the age of 9 just laugh at you. I feel pitty for him...
At least, besides not watching tennis matches (with the Williams being an exception, I admit it), I can swim.
Dirk

17. Acting? Please someone
tell me why every one thinks that acting would be good career move? I tire of reading about some model or singer spouting off about how they want to begin a career in acting - and then lay waste to some perfectly innocent film/television show with their stinking performance (and by calling it a performance, I'm being quite generous). Acting takes TALENT.

22. Geez, it seems so obvious
that the bottom line is that she doesn't have to do anything for a living. I mean, take one look. She's already earned a ton of money, and on top of that, she'll have millionaires throwing themselves (or their checkbooks) at her for the rest of her life.
And as for her tennis - well, I'll be the first to admit that she'd beat me with one hand tied behind her back. So she never won a singles title? Is that supposed to mean that she's terrible? There are lots and lots of other women - and men - who can only hope to be as bad.
