would allow more democracy, human rights, and the idea of a social contract. I am all in favor of this. Instead of avoiding persecution by hiding in a bunker, one should work to end it entirely by promoting justice.


I was commenting on how energies that now go into supporting a nation state (Israel) were in past generations used to create social justice for all people. In a paranoid, tinfoilhat world view, the Israeli nation was created as just this sort of distraction.

But I don't do that, so I cannot debate along those lines.

I don't see Israel as runing counter to progressive ideals.

On the contrary, Israel is a stable democracy that has adopted universal standards of human rights, which has installed a social contract far more ambitious than any we have attempted in this country, a country that has brought progressive modernism to a region where authoritarian gangsterism has been the uninterrupted norm for the last 800 years.

Now you're going to tell me that Israel hasn't always lived up to the lofty ideals it has set for itself. I agree entirely.

I am a critic of most of the policies of the current government, but at the root of the matter, you cannot divorce Israel's policies from the unforunate neighbors it has chosen. I don't for a minute doubt that the overwhelming majority of Israeli citizens - Jewish and Arab alike- would leap at the opportunity of a lasting, stable peace. The Israel many on the left criticize is a product of its environment. Make the environment better, and your criticism should disappear.
