Nebraska charges man for having sex with 14-year-old wife
Nebraska charges man for having sex with 14-year-old wife

A 22-year-old man who legally married a 14-year-old girl in Kansas after she became pregnant has been criminally charged in Nebraska for having sex with her. Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning said Matthew Koso of Falls City began a sexual relationship with the girl when she was 13. After she became pregnant, her mother gave permission in May for Koso to take their daughter to Kansas, which allows minors to get married with parental consent.

17. Actually.
Just because a teenager is pregnant doesn't mean she was raped. If having sex with a teenager makes you a rapist, we'd have to clear out the high schools of nearly every teenage boy...

48. You're wrong
Two 13 year olds having sex is not neccessarily rape.

But then again, you supported sex between a 21 year old man and a 13 year old so you're on the record supporting pedophilia.

Mayhaps the FBI will be paying you a visit for such bullshit.

57. That may be the legality, but it ain't the reality
Teenagers consent to sex all the time. Sometimes even with adults.

Are we really going to say that teenagers cannot decide when or with whom they will have sex? Or that they can decide to have sex with a 17-year-old but not a 19-year-old or 21-year-old?

I think we also have to draw a distinction between teenagers and little kids. I see some posters referring to this guy as a "pedophile." Is that fair?

While I am not a fan of young men hitting on teenyboppers, in this particular case I say "leave 'em alone." They got married, for heaven's sake. I assume they did that because they love each other. Do we really want or need to prosecute this guy?

What's love got to do with it? A pedophile can declare himself in love with a 6 year old. Are you going to support that union as well?

65. Neither one of us knows why they got married, do we?
I don't support unions between pedophiles and six-year-olds, no, but the use of the term "pedophile" in this case is something of a red herring. We're talking an eight-year difference in age between a young man and an (obviously) sexually mature 13-year-old. Sleazy? Yes. Bad judgement? Yes. Pedophilia? I don't think that's fair.

It's not that I think 14-year-olds getting married is a great idea. But I will also entertain the possibility that the pair actually like and/or love each other.

They had sex, they got pregnant, they got married. Actually, they sound reasonably responsible. How should they be punished?

64. 13 is just too young
Yes, I think "pedophile" fits for an adult who has sex with a 13-year-old.

I'm not sure where i draw the line between "too young" and "criminal", but it's prolly around 16.

As for when it's no longer "too young", that's a real tough one... no set age; it's a matter of maturity. I know 30-somethings who are still "too young".

19. *sigh*
Sorry.

By law, chldren under the age of consent CANNOT legally consent to sex.

The actual age varies from state to state, but it is called "statutory rape" when an adult has consensual sex with a child.

13 is a child, period.

And adult had sex with a minor eight years his junior. Now I can understand and and oppose prosecutions when we are talking about 15/16 or 16/18 pairings, even 15/18 pairings.

But 13/21?

Nope.

Text book example of statutory rape.

12. I question just about everything in this story ...
As far as I'm concerned an adult male had sex with a child ---- NOT OK.
Someone please explain to me why Kansas would allow a 14 year old child to marry anyone ---- parental permission or not.
As a mother of an eleven year old daughter ----- the last thing I would do would be to allow her to marry the sexual abuser that impregnated her ---- an adult that has sex with a 13 year old child is a sexual abuser!

Sex Assault Charge

Fourteen-year-old wife is pregnant

Nebraska prosecutors have charged a 22-year-old Falls City man with sexual assault for having intimate relations with a 14-year-old girl he legally married in Kansas.

Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning says Matthew Koso of Falls City began a sexual relationship with the girl when she was 13.

Bruning says that after the teen became pregnant, her mother gave permission for Koso to take her daughter to Kansas and marry her. Kansas allows minors to get married with parental consent.

"The idea ... is repugnant to me," Bruning said. "These people made the decision to send their ... 14-year-old daughter to Kansas to marry a pedophile."

18. The law in many states is that way
It's not statutory anything if the parents approve.

Frighteningly, I think this is fairly common. There was a similar case in VA or MD several years ago that caught a lot of attention, where the child married her older boyfriend with her parents' blessing. And my folks' neighbors were just pleased as punch when the 55-year-old man across the street got their 15-year-old daughter pregnant: He not only had a good paying job but also a nice pension from the mines, that could support all their lazy assses.

37. It was Maryland
Anne Arundel County as a matter of fact. It was in 1998, the spring I think. When my husband and I went to the courthouse to be married by the clerk of the court later that year, it turned out that the chief clerk who did the ceremony was an old school friend of cousins of mine who attended the ceremony. We had a blast because he made the ceremony fun. Afterwards, we got chatting and he said that normally he loves doing weddings, but that wedding had been difficult for him. He knew that the law said if the parents gave their approval, which they had, and the couple seemed happy enough, but he still didn't think it was right. Still, instead of letting one of his subordinate clerks handle it, he did it and took the flak for it.

they would appear to have a case of pedophilia.

But who is a DA to disagree with the law of another state on what constitutes a marriage? I don't approve of the Kansas law; but this could also be used against gay marriages from Massachusetts.

Two out of three of my daughter's best friends in town were pregnant by age 16. They each have 2 kids now and they're 20. One of them we've lost touch with but the other is on public assistance - as was her family for all of her life. Her dad prefers jail to his family, because that is where he is most of the time.

Her younger sister has now had a kid too - I think she's 16 or 17 now.

Sorry, but you and I live in different Americas.

They should not COMPEL or threaten her to testify (though I think the husband/wife exemption comes into play).

As to paternity, if she puts his name down as the father on the birth certificate, that's evidence enough.

That said, "Mom" should be prosecuted as well as an "accessory after the fact".

and I had a friend who was 13 and worked at a bar, they thought she was 21, and she looked it. BTW, she also had a second baby by the time she was 13. She also was dating a cop and he never knew, until she let it slip.

How do we know that this guy KNEW she was 13. Maybe by the time he found out, she was pregnant, and was in love with her, and decided to marry her.

I'm sorry, but I don't think he should be carrying all the guilt, UNLESS he knew she was 13.
