Afghans protest outside U.S. base over arrests
BAGRAM, Afghanistan (Reuters) - About 2,000 Afghans protested outside the main American base in Afghanistan on Tuesday after the arrest of several villagers in what the U.S. military said was an anti-insurgent operation.

U.S. soldiers fired shots in the air after some protesters threw stones at military vehicles entering Bagram Air Base, north of the capital Kabul, witnesses said.

It was the biggest protest against the United States since 16 people were killed and scores injured in May following a Newsweek magazine article -- later retracted -- that U.S. guards at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba desecrated the Koran, Islam's holy book.

Tuesday's protesters chanted anti-U.S. slogans outside the Bagram base to demand the release of three men they said were detained when U.S. troops entered a house in Bagram village without permission

3. Night raids spark anti-US protest
Nearly 2,000 angry villagers protested early yesterday outside Bagram Air Base, the US military headquarters in Afghanistan, after US troops raided houses and arrested 10 people overnight, officials said.
"Thousands of angry protesters have gathered here in front of the Bagram base main gate," Northern Bagram district governor Kabir Ahmed said by phone from the scene of the rally.

"They demand the release of the 10 people US forces arrested from Deh-mullah village of Bagram last night."

4. Angry Afghans confront US forces (BBC News)
The demonstrators, chanting "Die America", were angry at the arrest of a number of villagers on Monday night. Some threw stones at military vehicles.

Piles of tyres were burned on the main road near the base, sending clouds of black smoke billowing over the area.

Eyewitness say US troops fired warning shots at the demonstrators. The US military are denying this.
