Cook: War in Iraq boosted terrorism

Press Association
Sunday July 24, 2005 12:38 PM

Former foreign secretary Robin Cook has said the invasion of Iraq
had "undoubtedly" boosted terrorism around the world.

Mr Cook, who quit the Cabinet over his opposition to the war, said
that unless the Government addressed the issue it would struggle to
win over young Muslims in Britain.

He stressed that he was not arguing that the attacks on London
would not have occurred if Britain had not joined the invasion.

However he said intelligence agencies had warned Tony Blair on the
eve of conflict that military action would increase the terrorist
threat to Britain.

"The problem is that we have handed al Qaida an immense propaganda
gift, one that they exploit ruthlessly," he told the BBC News 24
Sunday programme.

1. "The problem is that we have handed al Qaida an immense
propaganda gift<<

Sooooo, England masterminded Abu Ghraib and many others that have fallen off the radar... masterminded Gitmo... decided to use cluster bombs and napalm, decided to waste Fallujah... and decided to launch an illegal, ill thought out, ill planned for, ill conceived, rife with corruption war that has been more about profiteering than democracy. Pity.

2. Strange that you say that England 'masterminded' all that
'went along with' would be accurate. 'Mastermind' would apply to Dick Cheney, or similar.

4. Ah, fair enough
it can get hard to tell, sometimes. Britain does bear some blame for what has happened in Iraq, though it doesn't justify suicide bombings, it helps explain how extremists have reacted. The blame should be addressed in international courts, reparations, etc.

imagine trying to provide reparations for this.... just imagine it.... this is what we exposed the Iraqi children to and our soldiers to so that we could "WIN". Win what???? A deadly uncertain future... the lunatics in charge of the asylum need to be put back in their respective padded rooms.

“The numbers are overwhelming, but the potential horrors only get worse,” Robert C. Koehler of the Chicago-based Tribune Media Services wrote in an article about DU weapons entitled “Silent Genocide.”

“DU dust does more than wreak havoc on the immune systems of those who breathe it or touch it; the substance also alters one’s genetic code,” Koehler wrote. “The Pentagon’s response to such charges is denial, denial, denial. And the American media is its moral co-conspirator.”

The U.S. government has known for at least 20 years that DU weapons produce clouds of poison gas on impact. These clouds of aerosolized DU are laden with billions of toxic sub-micron sized particles. A 1984 Department of Energy conference on nuclear airborne waste reported that tests of DU anti-tank missiles showed that at least 31 percent of the mass of a DU penetrator is converted to nano-particles on impact. In larger bombs the percentage of aerosolized DU increases to nearly 100 percent, Fulk told AFP.

DU is harmful in three ways, according to Fulk: “Chemical toxicity, radiological toxicity and particle toxicity.”
<...>
“Exposure pathways for depleted uranium can be through the skin, by inhalation, and ingestion,” Moret wrote. “Nano-particles have high mobility and can easily enter the body. Inhalation of nano-particles of depleted uranium is the most hazardous exposure, because the particles pass through the lung-blood barrier directly into the blood.

“When inhaled through the nose, nano-particles can cross the olfactory bulb directly into the brain through the blood brain barrier, where they migrate all through the brain,” she wrote. “Many Gulf era soldiers exposed to depleted uranium have been diagnosed with brain tumors, brain damage and impaired thought processes. Uranium can interfere with the mitochondria, which provide energy for the nerve processes, and transmittal of the nerve signal across synapses in the brain.

8. Which was
the master plan indeed. Weds the administration to "war on terror" and the opposition to danger of losing it. Allows thousands of political opportunities, sources of profit, etc... Thanks to Wolfowitz, Rove and the others. Who will never be held accountable since democratic tent is so big.
