Miss America 2000 Kills Bicyclist

Monday, October 13, 2003

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A former Miss America (search) and wife of Lt. Gov. Steve Henry (search) struck a bicyclist with her car, killing the woman, police said.

Heather French Henry (search), who was Miss America 2000 (search), told police the sun was in her eyes as she was turning at an intersection Sunday evening and struck the 43-year-old woman, who was crossing outside the crosswalk.

Witnesses told police Henry had a green light at the time. Henry and her infant daughter were not injured.

30. I'm sorry, but "bicyclist" is a stupid word......
You're a motorcyclist or a cyclist or a monocyclist or possibly a tricyclist, but "bicyclist" is just plain silly.

I'd like to de-encouragise you from using that word please.

Cyclist means "person riding a bicycle".....or at least it does in the UK.

Sorry...just being a bit silly.

but American dictionaries like Webster's New World and Merriam-Webster do.

Edited on Mon Oct-13-03 12:28 PM by amen1234
there is NO sympathy expressed for family of the woman that Mrs. Henry killed....just lots of concern about Mrs. Henry, rather than the dead woman's family....poor Heather...'she is obviously very upset'...hopefully, the physicians refused to speak to the Henry Family....the lady that Mrs. Henry killed deserves at least that medical privacy, and a Governor should respect those laws and NOT be "in touch" with physicians at the hospital....such pressure from a Governor is horrifying...

"We're very concerned about the lady," Steve Henry said in a phone interview. "We've been in touch with the physicians at the hospital. That's where our primary thoughts are. Heather is extremely concerned about the lady and obviously very upset."

34. I believe that Steve Henry is a doctor too.
His term as Lt governor is nearly over.

Running for governor this time around is the Dem Ben Chandler. Opposing him is Mitch McConnell's bitch, Ernie Fletcher. I don't want him as governor, but if he wins, then his seat will be vacant in the house. Maybe Ernesto Scorsone will run again, and maybe win this time. Ernesto lost to Fletcher. Fletcher ran a real dirty campaign against Ernesto and won. He had all the drug company money, and big Republican backers on his side.

A favorite, Gatewood Galbraith is running for Attn General here in Ky. Good guy, kinda conservative, but still a good ol boy at heart. He's defended a lot of people busted for pot use, and is on the side of the farmers.

I guess that comes in handy when Pat Robertson fires one aging female cohost and feels the need to hire a younger model (whatever happened to Denuta and Sheila, anyways?).

Feds Condemn Robertson for Nuke Comment
Sat Oct 11,12:21 PM ET

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The U.S. State Department has condemned an on-air suggestion by religious broadcaster Pat Robertson that the agency ought to be blown up with a nuclear device.

Robertson, who heads the Virginia Beach-based Christian Broadcasting Network, made the remark while interviewing author Joel Mowbray on "The 700 Club" television program last week. Mowbray wrote a book called "Dangerous Diplomacy: How the State Department Endangers America's Security."

"I read your book. When you get through, you say, 'If I could just get a nuclear device inside Foggy Bottom, I think that's the answer.' I mean, you get through this, and you say, 'We've got to blow that thing up,'" Robertson said during the interview.

14. Anita Bryant even got mentioned under DU #10 Idiots link.....
Anita's impact is still with us, she single-handedly changed America...today's youth could use such 'satirical ways' of mocking bush* thugs, maybe develop a few good comic strips, or war protest songs or poems, or theatre (doonsbury became famous during the Vietnam War, and we really need an Iraqi war strip for the youth of America to fully realize that bush* draft is coming to them)....

-------------------------------------------
From the Washington Blade....link on today's DU #10 conservative idiots...-snips-

‘Sea Blade’ too gay for Navy ship name
Lockheed Martin denies Pentagon forced renaming of warship

The first issue of the Washington Blade, then called the Gay Blade, was a one-page newsletter copied on a mimeograph machine in 1969. Former publisher Don Michaels, who sold the paper to Window Media in May 2001, said that the term “gay blade” was a tongue in check reference to the 1920s.

“If you were a ‘gay blade,’ you were suspected of being a homosexual,” Michaels said. “Over a period of time, the gay movement used that in a satirical way.”

The Gay Blade in New York was, according to Michaels, a “hideous anti-gay pamphlet” that Anita Bryant sold at her anti-gay rallies.

19. ahhh, the power of satire...if memory serves me well...Anita's
"orange juice" sponsorship dried up, as it became more and more apparent that Anita's efforts were actually 'helping' promote the rights of homosexual people....and her influence survives to this day....

if only today's youth realized that the 'power of satire' can be BIG and long-lasting....and decided to put some 'satirical' effort out toward shrub and his thugs....

Anita is probably NOT on TV, because these 'miss america' types don't weather the years very well (cigarettes, abusive husbands and many divorces, diseased silicone implants, booze, oxycotin, valley-of-the-dolls, suntans, laura-bush-screwed-up-eye-surgeries, face lifts)...it all takes a heavy toll....

Heather French Henry is also the wife of a Democratic/practicing Physician Lt Governor (just paid a hefty fine relating to Medicare fraud brought by the Rethugs running the agency) and Heather herself is a two-time mom.

16. WOW!!!! the bicyclist was mowed down by a BIG SUV.....
Edited on Mon Oct-13-03 04:28 PM by amen1234

-snips-

After the crash, the front tire and seat were ripped off the bike. The Lincoln's grille was damaged in several places, and the vehicle's left rear tire was punctured.

Henry's vehicle — a Lincoln Navigator — was westbound on Lexington and had just turned left onto Grinstead, striking the cyclist in the right-hand lane just south of the crosswalk on Grinstead, said Alicia Smiley, a Louisville Metro Police spokeswoman. The impact carried the cyclist a bit farther down the road; Smiley did not know the distance.

.....Henry said: "It's hard on anybody when you hit a person. It's very tough on people."

.....Henry said: "It's hard on anybody when you hit a person. It's very tough on people." Yeah, especially on the person being run over by the 4 wheeled monster. <sarcasm> Thank god there was only minor damage to the grill. It can probably be buffed out. </sarcasm>

I ride every day and just got done telling a co-worker about how I was almost hit by a car that going to turn into a drive way ahead of me as I approached in the bike lane. The woman had just passed me on the left and was going to turn right, right into me. The bitch's peripheral vision was obscured to her right because, surprise, that was the hand she was holding her cell phone with. I'm still recovering from the last time I was hit by a car, a little over 3 months ago, which makes it 12 times I have been hit by cars while riding my bike. Stupid fucking car drivers kill over 42,000 people a year. So where is the outrage? Cars are far more injurious to American society than terrorism, or even war itself. Do the math.

I'm so pissed off right now I can't even type, so I better end this before I really start to rant. I have to deal with thoughtless potentially deadly drivers on a daily basis, so ask me anything....

18. since you know that intersection, can you give more details?
how many lanes are there, on both streets? what's the speed limit? does the signal have a separate left-turn phase, or is it one of those signals where left-turning drivers have to wait for a gap in traffic, AND watch out for peds who may have the walk-light on at the same time?

it sounds to me like the driver was going too fast.

aside: what does the vehicle code say about driving when "blinded"? is it OK to kill someone when driving "blind"?

21. Two Lanes Each Of Two Streets Meeting At An Angle
Edited on Mon Oct-13-03 05:06 PM by Don_G
Eastbound Grinstead Drive faces directly into the sunlight at 6:30 PM this time of year. No pedestrian walk lights, through signals only on the traffic lights and at the end of a curve and no bike lanes.

The corners have a used car lot, a school, a convinence store and a metal recycling business. In the direction she was coming from is the back side of Cave Hill Cemetary established in the late 1700's with a brick wall and no sidewalk; a Dog Kennel and city property on the other, also with no sidewalk.

Residential housing starts on one street only and not within 150 yards of that intersection...the rest is industrial and commercial.

No, it's not okay to kill anyone at any time.

I believe Dr "Lt Gov" Steve Henry sounded a little callous in the article because he is far more used to death than his wife is.

I have no idea of what she's going through but I hope she handles it for the sake of herself and her kids.

There's nothing behind it nor near it. It's not often that anyone has an accident at that intersection, much less killed by anyone that's a political figure or not.

On Edit: It's easy to practice 20/20 hindsight, but no one was hurt or killed there before and the city chose to direct their efforts, money and patrols on several busy roads less than a mile from there.

and the person who was killed was living the better life (less destructive to the environment, healthier and kinder to all living things)....

the person doing the killing (Mrs. Henry) was mega-consuming and irresponsible...people choosing to drive such mega-vehicles have additional responsibilities to watch out for smaller defenseless pedestrians and bicycle riders...

there was little remorse expressed by the Henry family...their primary concerns seemed to be themselves....

on edit: and a different choice of vehicles may have saved the bicyclist's life...those BIG SUVS often hinder the view of pedestrians and babycarts and bicycles and even the yellow lines and pedestrian cross-walks...if these mega-consumers were forced to drive a little closer to the road, then maybe they could SEE something...these mega-consuming self-absorbed people wipe people out just trying to turn these oversized unneccessary vehicles, which is what seemed to happen here....the bicyclist had no chance...

Edited on Tue Oct-14-03 01:23 AM by Don_G
I'm just stating that a Faux news article did not account for all the factual data that was brought out by a local paper and IMHO would not strictly because her husband was a Dem.

Does he need an SUV? No, because the hospital or the state will provide him with transportation in an emergency situation and/or when the weather is bad enough to justify sending out an SUV. Is is worth another individuals life just to drive one? Again, no.

I'm simply stating that a bare minimum of the facts were reported by Faux concerning the family of an elected Democratic offical and both DU and the Freepers jumped on this with both feet before I could point out the local article that stated "witnesses...."

I also drove by there every day for over two years and I do know the area better than most cops in the District (no donut shops, crime or eye-candy in the area).

Since the 'victim' was on a bike at the time of the accident, it therefore follows that she was living a 'better life, was healthier and kinder to all living things' than the 'murderous' Mrs. Henry?

What nonsense.

This is a motorcycle-oriented bumper sticker that speaks up for the bicyclist, too.

Speed limits are there for a reason. Respect them.

'Nuff said.

On streets, I slow-down to pass bicyclists, and "anywhere" (feeway or street) I keep an eye out for my Harley, Kawasaki and Gold Wing buddies. Always signal lane changes and turns a few seconds in advance....so the Harley behind you knows whether or not you're going to pass the car in front....

Same goes for signalling your turn on a street to a bicyclist.

No sympathies here for Ms. beauty-queen who ran over and killed a bicyclist. That was me on that bicycle a few years ago, it was me a couple of months ago, and it might be me on a road ride next week.....

47. I'm An Ex-Biker Myself
Motorcyclist and I know how "they" are and I'm not sure it didn't happen here yet again.

I just wanted to take the edge off of a Faux article and present another opinion from a local news source that's been in the business since the 1850's and to offer my observations concerning that area.

Feel free to make any moral judgement you want to based upon factual data....

Faux news as a single source "might" qualify as long as Drudge and Rush were the only two "Entertainers" repeating that drivel word-for-word.

50. From a bicyclists viewpoint
I ride about +5000 km a year, with both long overland cycle tours and a daily ride to work (19 km both ways). I use to ride fast, but in a defensive way, wearing a helmet and reflective, brightly colored clothing. After all, it's my life to protect, so I don't care if it's fashionable ...

I'm lucky to live in Germany, which translates to lots of bicyle lanes and drivers accustomed to bikers. Not as good as in the Netherlands, but improving. However, I quite often get into dangerous situations caused by non-attentive car drivers. They just don't seem to imagine how dangerous their behaviour is, and how weakly protected a bicyclist or pedestrian is in comparison to their crash zone, safety belt and airbag.

I argued with quite a lot of them about their mindlessness, and occasionally I had to jump/fall off my bike in order to avoid a crash. Luckily enough, I never had a serious accident, just minor bruises.

I imagine that in a country where most people never ride a bicycle (except when they were kids), they will more easily lack the necessary caution towards pedestrians and cyclists.

However, neither being a former Miss America nor being the wife of a politician has anything to do with driving more reckless or less attentive. But I sure would guess being the mother of a three month old infant may cause a lot of sleep deprivation.

51. Many cyclists
Edited on Tue Oct-14-03 08:05 AM by FlaGranny
in the US ride stupidly - which I'm not saying this victim was, of course. I've almost hit cyclists three times. In each case the cyclist was riding on a sidewalk (on my left) and obscured by bushes and riding FAST. In each case, the rider could see my car long before I could see the bike. Due to my very fast reflexes, the worst that happened was that I lightly tapped one of the bikes and the biker did not fall. Each of these people was an adult male, riding like he was the only person on the planet. Each time I was left totally shaken at the thought of what could have been. I can only imagine the horror this young woman feels at taking another life accidentally. I am shocked that some of the folks here are more or less calling the driver a murderer for driving an SUV. SUV drivers are not inherently evil and sometimes accidents happen.

P.S. this post is not particularly directed at you ze-dscherman.

I didn't take any offense, people behaving stupid are to be found everywhere and in any group. I always consider myself lucky I never hurt anyone in any accident.

54. Heather Henry... former co-host of WDRB-TV's "Fox in the Morning" show.
Edited on Tue Oct-14-03 10:10 AM by amen1234
no wonder she got Fox news to published her whole cover-her-ass story by Monday morning, considering that this happened on Sunday evening....usually the police won't release witnesses and discuss the case until at least the investigation is complete....

no investigation for this Fox news reporter, blood tests for drugs?, seize her SUV to search, check her cell phone records....like other reTHUGS,,,she gets off free....even has people feeling sorry for her...it's the Laura Bush approach....kill people with no consequences....oh dear, "Heather is .... obviously very upset.", so don't you feel sorry for this MEGA-Road hog SUV driver who ran down someone's mother, sister, aunt, friend???? cry for Heather, says Fox news...feel sorry for Heather, says FOX...and even here on DU, some love FOX and are defending a FOX news host's indefensible actions...even loving the FOX news host's unacceptable ROAD HOG SUV and probably her big diamond ring that poor black Africans died to bring to her....it amazes me how FOX news can spread such crap around here too and even fuel a DU fight over how GREAT mrs.henry is and DEFEND her....this bicycle rider had no chance against mrs. henry's MEGA ROAD HOG SUV, and her family has no chance against mrs. henry's BIG time FOX news friends...the tragedy here is the family/friends of the woman who was killed, and mrs. henry seems more concerned about herself...

-snip-

55. FOX41 (WDRB-TV)...... mrs. henry on FRONT NEWS PAGE
Edited on Tue Oct-14-03 11:28 AM by amen1234
the TRUTH will never be known about the killing of a bicyclist...

lots more here about mrs. henry's devastation, and mrs. henry's cancellation of her public appearances (at least for today....)

let's hear MORE DUer's PRAISE mrs. henry....afterall, she's really put out by cancelling her "appearances for the time being" (so much so, that it's front page news on FOX)....

imagine if your mother was killed by this SUV ROAD HOGGING MEGA-CONSUMER, and the killer sends a consolation emphasizing the killer's suffering...only a good reTHUGlican compassionate conservative would be so COLD...like FOX show hosts...the family of the dead woman will NEVER know what really happened here...the cover-up is done...

...one must wonder if she had the compassion to even call for an ambulance FIRST....
The lieutenant governor, in an interview with a Courier-Journal reporter at the scene, said his wife called him immediately after the crash and that he probably arrived at the scene in less than a minute.

FOX just forgot to mention that mrs. henry was a host of their shows...how could they possible forget THAT detail ????

---------------------------------

-snips-

The former Miss America and wife of Kentucky Lieutenant-Governor Steve Henry has cancelled all public appearances for the time being.

In a statement from the Kentucky Lieutenant Governor's office, Steve Henry expressed his family's heartfelt condolences and sympathies to Karola Stede's family.

The statement said, "Heather is just devastated."

56. As Someone WHO KNOWS Heather and her family...
Edited on Tue Oct-14-03 11:35 AM by pezcore64
Id just like to say ...STOP ATTACKING HER! IT WAS AN ACCICEDENT PEOPLE! She is truely upset about this! You people act like she doesnt give a damn and is faking her distress...well think again! You are all so quick to attack people without even thinking about how they feel. imagine yourself in her place, you mean to tell me you wouldnt be upset over this? you think she intentionally meant to kill someone? good lord. whats wrong with you people?

Maybe Im a bit bias since im from her hometown and have known her family for a long time, but, GROW UP and find real evil people to attack. Go back to talking about how bad Rush is with his drug abuse, not slander a woman who just had a horrific accident which resulted in a death. My brother is STILL recovering(emotionally) from an accident in which someone died that took place 12 years ago! this will live with her for a long time!

My heart and thoughts go out to the family of the bicyclist.

58. thanks for praising mrs. henry...and welcome to DU.....

lots of words about poor mrs. henry...and one little line about the family of the bicyclist....

perhaps it's time to stop expressing empathy and sympathy for mrs. henry...and time to express a little empathy and sympathy for the family of the woman killed by mrs. henry (the dead woman may have been a mother, sister, aunt, friend and those people may well have needs much bigger than mrs. henry, who thankfully is cancelling her 'appearances for the time being')....

maybe you could start a collection to buy some sunglasses for mrs. henry?

62. Thanks for your thoughts/insight (and welcome to DU)
Tragic accidents are... well tragic.

Most tragic for those who lose a loved one. Nothing can replace that loss. Nothing.

Also tragic for those who must live with the guilt for the rest of their lives. Those can be hard scars to lose.

Sometimes folks lose perspective - and unless there is more learned about the situation I find the reflexive vitriol/blame to be over the top.

Thanks also to Don_G for his discussion of the intersection. Given your description, and that of witnesses to the sun-blindness at the time, the story sounds like a very tragic accident.

Those blaming SUV driving (and I am not a big fan of SUVs) - in this story it seems irrelevant. I have known of pedestrians killed in similar tragic circumstances from regular sized cars.

67. Update on FOXNews (mrs. henry hosted shows on FOX-TV)
updated -snips-

Heather French Henry, who was Miss America 2000, told police the sun was in her eyes as she was turning at an intersection Sunday evening and struck the woman....

"Heather is just devastated," her husband said in a statement Monday, adding that she never saw the bicyclist. The lieutenant governor's wife has canceled public appearances until further notice.

Peter Brand, who had been riding with Stede, said she was a native of Germany who had lived in Louisville the past several months.
