NY Subway entrances to be decorated w/electronic billboards(Clear Channel)
Edited on Mon Oct-13-03 05:17 AM by khephra
(Mods, I had to modify the title a bit so that people will know that Clear Channel is involved. I changed "Manhattan" to "NY". I hope that's ok....)

NEW YORK (AP) _ The day of the dark, unwelcoming subway entrance may soon be over.

Subway stations throughout Manhattan will be getting 80 electronic billboards from Clear Channel Communications that display animated images.

The deal between Clear Channel and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority is expected to bring in $15 million. The billboards would stretch from Wall Street to 110th Street. But not everyone is lit up about the idea, the Daily News reported in Monday editions.

"It's like bringing Times Square to every local community," said Assemblyman Scott Stringer. The Manhattan politician is drafting legislation to ban the signs in residential areas.

7. Old News
There's been one on the uptown N/R station on 23rd and Bway for over a year now. The only difference between that and the other ads above the subway is that it moves. Is it really worth getting upset about it?

9. yes it is
Is there any place on earth where we are free from the assault of advertising? I am sick of being beat over the head with ads everytime I turn around.

14. Where have you been for the past decade?
Some perspective: This moving ad is just replacing a normal static ad on the subway station. The one on the other entrance is a static lit Johnny Walker ad of about the same brightness. If I stand on the corner of 23rd and Broadway facing downtown (towards this CC ad), when I look up and to the right a little, I see a big, ugly, yellow, 7-story tall Nextel ad painted on the side of a building. I'll take the 6'x2' CC Coke ad, thanks.

I don't actually mind either of these sorts of ads too much. They're non-obtrusive and I can ignore them if I really want to. What I hate are active ads, things that get in your way when you want to do something, like the forced previews/trailers in front of DVD movies, popup windows on the Web or those god damn Flash ads that pop up over text that I am reading - or worse make a lot of noise. It gets in the way of what I am doing and forces me to either look at it or take action. Billboard type ads just sit there and are easily ignored. Until we see Minority Report-style ads with interactivity and voice/noise I won't fight against them. I'd rather not deal with them, but it's a small price to pay for the convenience of modern life.

20. where have I been for the past decade?
Hiding out from ads. I'm a former Madison Ave. marketing manager, advertising copywriter and producer of TV ads. I saw the error of my ways. Now I'm a university instructor. I mute all ads on TV and radio. I try like hell to avoid the visual assault.

You seem to think you have no choice and that you have to choose between the lesser of two evils. I'm saying we shouldn't have to have our environment cluttered up with any of this.

8. Another Way to Look at This
I see this as a another sign of how desperate advertisers are becoming. Bathrooms, pool tables, taxi-cabs. If they have to work that hard to get our attention, we must not be consuming enough.

Sinking to it's natural level under Bushevik Rule, which is Orwellian-Totalitarian Oligarchic Crony Capitalism.

This is just but one small step on the Downward Spiral.

21. I hate Clear Channel
Even though I have had the misfortune of working indirectly for them (it's impossible if you work in live entertainment in anyway these days) I still hate clear channel. They're the death of America and these electronic billboards prove it. Up to 110?? What, Harlem, Wash Hts not good enough for them? Well, I guess they better be ready for vadalism. I'm giving them about 3 weeks before they're tagged out of recognition. Grafitti knows no borders, watch for them to go down. I'm not a big fan of private property destruction, but this seems to be a case of C.D., to prevent the influx of adverstising in each second of our lives. I go to NYC enough and tt's already shitty enough to have to look at the same 7 or 8 posters on the Subway each two weeks, now we need this shit?
