Narco News to Stop Publishing Oct. 18 (Say it ain't so, Al!)
October 10, 2003

Dear Colleagues,

Narco News regrets to inform our readers that your trilingual online newspaper will suspend publishing new reports on October 18, three-and-a-half years after we began reporting on the drug war and democracy from Latin America.

The suspension will be indefinite, it may be permanent, but the suspension will last at least until the New Year. We thank our readers and supporters who have helped to keep Narco News publishing non-stop since April 18, 2000.

It was a difficult, but, necessary, decision, explained here:

http://narconews.com/Issue31/article879.html

We still have some important news stories in the hopper that we will publish over the next week. But then, at least for 2003, that will be it.

Our reasons are spelled out in detail...

1. Terribly sad news
Edited on Sun Oct-12-03 03:05 AM by GermanDJ
I was directed to Narco News via Mike Rupperts work only a couple of months ago. During the 80s I heard only rumours about the dirty details of the so-called "war on drugs", but I was never able to confirm them (the main stream press was no great help).
Sad, that this ressource seems to end now.

Escpecially when you read Al Giordano's explanation :(

3. Yup.
Journalism in much of Latin America is just plain not safe. Piss off people down there and they don't sue you, they kill you. At the very least they trash your operation.

And it's not just Latin America:

While we piss and moan about whether news here is slanted left or right, there are journalists out there in the world putting their lives on the line to get the truth out.

Many of them are stringers for international and US news operations, and far too many have died or been imprisoned to get us the news we bitch about.

Where's the outrage?

4. the people at Narconews are heros one and all

I'm very sorry they have to stop publishing.

Note what he says about the bloody hands bushgang upping their violence against all who oppose them.

The closer we come to getting rid of them the uglier they will and are acting. They have the power now and will not give it up without a dirty, bloody fight.
