OIC demands eviction of all foreign forces from Iraq
Putrajaya (Malaysia), Oct. 11: Muslim nations demanded “eviction of all foreign forces from Iraq” as they began a summit in Malaysia on Saturday, with only Turkey defending plans to deploy its troops alongside the US-led alliance.

Mr Abdelouahed Belkeziz, secretary-general of the 57-member Organisation of the Islamic Conference, said occupying forces should quickly withdraw from Iraq to give the United Nations a chance to reconstruct the country.

The OIC Summit, being held in Malaysia’s new administrative capital of Putrajaya, began with meetings of senior officials. Foreign ministers will meet on Monday and the leaders’ summit takes place on October 16-17.

Up to 35 heads of state are expected to attend in what will be the largest gathering of Muslim leaders since the attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001.

. .SPEECH OF H.E. DR ABDELOUAHED BELKEZIZ SECRETARY GENERAL OF
THE ORGANISATION OF THE ISLAMIC CONFERENCE

BEFORE THE SENIOR OFFICIALS MEETING FOR THE TENTH ISLAMIC
SUMMIT CONFERENCE

PUTRAJAYA MALAYSIA 15 SHAABAN 1424H (11 OCTOBER 2003)

<snip>

"Afghanistan was invaded; Iraq occupied;
and the campaign against Islam, the Islamic culture
and its adherents gained momentum. It is no wonder,
then, why an extraordinary summit and two
emergency ministerial conferences were held to
address those events.

As I speak, we are still under the strain of
extremely difficult challenges and unprecedented
threats to our countries’ independence, sovereignty,
security and courses. This makes the Summit you are
preparing for today one during which to ponder on
how to confront the challenges, crises and dangers
facing the Islamic Ummah.

The Iraqi people, who suffered long years of
war, then of restrictions, sanctions and depletion of
their resources, have recently been afflicted by the
occupation of their territories, usurpation of their
sovereignty, denial of their independence,
destruction, plunder and burning of their country, as
well as lack of security and shortage of basic
services.

This reality calls for a clear Islamic
commitment to address the situation with a view to
salvaging Iraq and helping its people to end all that I
have mentioned. Foremost of these is the eviction of
foreign forces from Iraq, allowing the United Nations
to administer Iraqi affairs, prelude to the restoration
of Iraq’s independence, and to the rebuilding of what
has been destroyed over the past 20 years, all in
accordance with a clear and short time table."
