Bush Says He'll Consider Woman for Court
Bush Says He'll Consider Woman for Court
By JESSE J. HOLLAND, Associated Press Writer

Wednesday, July 13, 2005

(07-13) 08:56 PDT WASHINGTON (AP) --

President Bush said Wednesday that he would consider nominating a woman or someone with no experience as a judge to replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.

"We're considering all kinds of people — judges, non-judges," Bush said, adding that he also is open to picking a woman — something that Laura Bush said she hoped he would do.

Talking to reporters following a Cabinet meeting, Bush declined to say when he would announce his decision and said that if he knew when he would begin interviewing individuals he probably wouldn't say.

"We're still consulting with members of the Senate, and I anticipate continued consultations," Bush said.

"But the American people can rest assured that I understand the seriousness of this responsibility and I will name someone who will bring dignity to the court, someone who will be able to do the job and someone who will sit on that bench and interpret the Constitution and not use the bench from which to legislate."

34. It only has to be an intelligent jurist
They would need to have some qualifying background but like those chosen for Grand Juries, they do not have to come from the domain of Law! It could well be his father!

36. Earl Warren was never a Judge as far as I know
he was Governor of California when WW2 started and was and advocate for Japanese internment.

Look how he turned out as a judge.

Do not be so quick to reject a elected official who is other wise qualified to be nominated.

Perhaps some one with an elected background would have seen the idiocy's of the eminent domain decision.

I like the idea of a non judge nominee.

One would think "considering" a woman would be part and parcel of considering all top jurists, but it's nice that he's making sure we know.

... put it. "Top jurists." "Oh, and women, too." What an idiot.

43. my reaction, exactly
Like the idea of picking a woman is as unusual as the idea of picking someone who hasn't been a judge.

What year is this again?

7. "no experience as a judge" = no paper trail
In a sane world, I'd like to be confident that such an individual stood no chance of confirmation. Sadly, the Chimperor could nominate a ham sandwich and have his butt-kissing sycophants claim it's kosher.

31. This wouldn't please his RW followers though.
I've heard MANY of them on TV since O'Connor retired saying they want a long history on the bench so they can be SURE they know what's in that persons mind. They want a long history of rulings so they don't get another middle of the roader! They want a Rehnquist or even more RW than him! They'll settle for NOTHING LESS!

and I wonder the whole question of appointing a woman was a deliberate setup. Just like the old Thomas-for-Marshall switch ("but we're filling a female spot.")
