EXPLOSIVES FOUND IN CAR

Explosives have been found in a car identified by police as being linked to last Thursday's London terror attacks.

Police evacuated Luton railway station after being alerted to the suspicious vehicle this afternoon

Four controlled explosions were carried out on the car after a 100-yard cordon was placed around the station and its car park.

Meanwhile, detectives later identified a second suspect car in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire.

1. Does it seem odd to anyone that the car identified to LAST THURSDAY'S
terror attack was just found parked TODAY? One would think that a car that had been left in a parking spot for almost a week would be looked at earlier.

6. It's a station car park
there may well be a lot of cars left there overnight; long distance trains going north from London stop there, so people from the north north of London may pick them up there.

16. Perhaps; given the London bombs, it might have been a good idea
for them to start noting all the cars that had been there since Thursday. But, as well as the trains to the north of England, Luton station also has a shuttle bus to Luton airport, and runs trains to Gatwick airport; it's possible that people use it as a carpark for those as well.

The fact that they did go to Luton on the same day may indicate they had made a list of cars there, but hadn't used it as a reason for further action yet; when they knew what they were looking for (there's some idea it's rental car - I haven't checked the latest news on it), it was found fairly quickly.

17. They do that sort of thing for rail accidents
I know that they monitored car parks on the Reading line when the
Paddington crash happened (for example) so I wouldn't be surprised
if this triggered further investigation.

As you say though, Luton will sometimes have cars parked there for
airport journeys as well so it's not quite so obvious as it would
be for other stations on the same line.

2. They are acting like a bunch of democrats...
They investigate and prosecute the perpetrators. Why don't they follow the Bush doctrine and go invade a weaker country that had nothing to do with it. I was going to make a poll to see if we could help them determine the best country to invade. I bet Bush is really disappointed with that soft on terror Tony Blair.

No terrorists, but great vacation spot.

4. I've lived in Britain; they do excellent police work. They have prevented
IMO, a number of UK attacks before they occurred. They were not able to prevent this one.

And, indeed, I would not expect Britain to invade a foreign country they've been itching to invade in response to this terror.

10. I agree. My theory on why police are so good in the UK:
#1: In US, every crime in America is committed in a jurisdiction where at a minimum, three different police forces have jurisdiction: FBI, State Police and County Police. Sometimes there might even be a village or city police force involved. They have to argue about jurisdiction, they have different offices, and they often don't cooperate because one might want to reserve success for themselves. In the UK, you have county police and some national task force, and therefore much less competition and much more cooperation and much more efficient use of resources.

#2: With the very few murders in the UK, there is much less police triage. They don't have to shift resources to a high profile, terrifying murder because there are far fewer. I'm sure there's triage in the UK, but I bet it happens less often. Without a plethora of serious crimes, they can concentrate on the ones they have.

#3: all the cameras.

#4: (unfortunately) IRA-era restrictions on civil rights and no bill of rights (but now there's a European Charter of Human Rights, and I honestly can't think of a post-IRA era example of an outrageous abuse of police powers).

15. I agree top-notch investigations
I said it in the beginning the Brits will find out who did this. They have much experience dealing with terrorist issues.

I'm assuming these people *want* people to know who did this, and why.

20. Leighton Buzzard is a quiet little village
On the rail line yes.

But Leighton Buzzard is rather like Warrenton, Virginia.
