Specter to Air Anger Over Stem Cell Limits
WASHINGTON - Sen. Arlen Specter (news, bio, voting record), suffering from cancer, said Monday he plans to take public his anger over the government's restrictions on funding for studies on human embryonic stem cells.

"I think it's time that a little hell was raised about this subject," Specter, R-Pa., said in a telephone interview.

That time will arrive Tuesday, Specter said, when he gavels open the Senate's first hearing on his bill to lift President Bush's restrictions on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research. It carries the greatest promise among such studies searching for cures to Alzheimer's disease and other ailments.

Set to testify Tuesday are four scientists whose research — to date neither published nor performed on human cells — could receive federal funding instead as alternatives to using human embryonic stem cells.

Bush and conservatives who believe studies on human embryos are immoral are considering bills to pay for such research in part to peel votes from Specter's bill.

1. I Hope This Makes A Difference...
Maybe for once, something a Republican does benefits somebody else.

5. But, of course, only because he's affected as well...
I wonder if he'd be as gung-ho about this issue if he didn't have cancer...

2. Dear Sen Specter... You need to quit the GOP.
Become a Democrat, go Independent, whatever. But as long as you are part of the republican party, you are part of the problem.

4. As Carl Sagan might say: The Mythologists are attempting another takover.
We can not let them throw 500 years of scientific observation in the toilet to appease their mythologic figures.

If religion hadn't stifled science in the dark ages, we would be exploring the stars right now.

9. Some moderate
GOP senators and congressmen like Ron Paul, Specter, Collins, Chafee, and Snowe really should either become independent or form their own center-right party. The GOP has become too extreme for them.

11. I agree
If the Party of Lincoln has more in common with modern day libertianism than conserative republicanism.

15. It already happened once in our history, well kinda sorta........
Democratic-Republican Party (United States)
The Democratic-Republican party was the first United States political party, which evolved early in the history of the United States. Although General and later President George Washington warned about the "evils" of political parties, it was bound to happen due to the opposite ideas between people like Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton. In addition, some refer to the party as the Jeffersonian Republicans since Thomas Jefferson belonged to the party and had a major influence on its ideology; it is also referred to as simply the Republican Party, not to be confused with the modern Republican Party. Indeed, the name Democratic-Republican did not come into use until the time of Andrew Jackson. Previously, the party was always known as the Republican party. The anachronistic use of Democratic-Republican for pre-Jacksonian politicians is merely for the sake of convenience, to prevent confusion with the modern Republican party, and does not reflect the actual usage of the time. Additionally, this party should not be confused with Jeffersonian democracy, a term used to indicate the period when the government was run by aristocratic learned men, as opposed to the period of Jacksonian democracy where the common man ran the government.

The origins of this party lie in the Anti-Federalist Party, the group that opposed the adoption of the United States Constitution and insisted on the Bill of Rights. After the Federalist presidency of John Adams, Thomas Jefferson became the first Democratic-Republican President.

For a brief period, the Democratic-Republican Party was the sole dominant party in U.S. politics. At its apex, James Monroe ran virtually unopposed in the 1820 presidential election. This period was known as the Era of Good Feeling. Shortly afterward, the party would split into two factions: the Jacksonian Democrats, led by Andrew Jackson (which later evolved into the Democratic Party); and the National Republicans, led by John Quincy Adams (which later evolved into the Whig Party).

The following United States Presidents were members of the Democratic-Republican party:

Thomas Jefferson (1801 - 1809)
James Madison (1809 - 1817)
James Monroe (1817-1825)
John Quincy Adams (1825-1829)

Modern claims to Democratic-Republican heritage
The stature of the Presidents who identified themselves with the Democratic-Republican Party during its heyday makes it an enviable institution for modern political parties to identify themselves with. As a result, both major political parties today identify themselves with the party.

As noted above, the Democratic Party is a direct descendant of the Democratic-Republican Party. The Republican Party also sees itself as a spiritual descendant of the Democratic-Republicans, though it has much looser ties from their broad base of former Whig voters and politicians. Neither the modern-day Democratic nor Republican party has identifiable ties to the Federalist Party, which was the most important rival of the original Democratic-Republican party.

8. Specter has the GOP over a little barrel.
If he quit Rendell would nominate a Democrat. Santorum has little chance of being re-elected. That's two out of the six needed to change the Senate

theory in the Warren Commission findings about the Kennedy Assassination, which falsely concluded that Oswald acted alone in killing Kennedy. We now know Oswald never fired a shot.

If he didn't have cancer he wouldn't give a flyin' fuck.

Nevertheless, his words and actions about embryonic stem cell research are worth all the publicity we can all milk it for.
