Police hunt 'mercenary' terror gang recruited by al-Qa'ida

Police and intelligence agents areinvestigating the theory that a gang of white "mercenary terrorists" was hired by al-Qa'ida to carry out last week's devastating attacks on London.

...

The theory was given credence by the fact that the security services had no advance warnings, suggesting that the bombers were not known extremists. Police and intelligence agencies admitted yesterday they were caught off guard.

Maybe it is an OKC style attack? Do we have a British Timothy McVeigh?

1. Here in Los Angeles, years ago. . .
some of the the inner-city street gangs -- the Crips and the Bloods -- began to spread out from the city into the suburbs.

I mention this because one of the first things they did was hide their growing influence behind a facade of respectable, middle class white kids. For example, to sell drugs, they approached the jocks, reasoning they'd most likely not use all the product but would have the muscle to enforce collections.

So I'm not surprised if al Qaeda has used some "fronts" to foment their terror. What I am surprised by is that the police and intelligence agencies were caught off guard by this tactic. I guess they, too, can't imagine a world in which people use aircraft as a missile -- even if one of the more popular action novels of the '90s ended with just such an attack on the Capitol Building in Washington D.C.

I know I'm smarter than Condaleeza Rice. I'm just surprised the British bobbies aren't, too.
