Federal Judge Says Government Money Can't Be Spent for Boy Scout Outing
http://ap.tbo.com/ap/breaking/MGBW96TUVAE.html

CHICAGO (AP) - A federal judge has ruled the Pentagon can no longer spend millions in government money to ready a Virginia military base for a national Boy Scout event typically held every four years, the American Civil Liberties Union announced Thursday.

U.S. District Judge Blanche Manning's June 22 order stems from a 1999 lawsuit by the ACLU of Illinois that claimed the Defense Department sponsorship violates the First Amendment because the Scouts require members to swear an oath of duty to God.

2. Good, and necessary ................
but I still think it's a crying shame about the Boy Scouts. If not for the religious and anti-gay crap it would be a great thing for boys to join. My dad was a successful, high-ranking boy scout back in the day, and left in high school because the scoutmaster thought he (my dad) was not a good churchgoer.

My dad, BTW, was a f---ing SAINT, RIP.

I bet you, as we sit here, Pat Robertson is already planning a 30 minute news segment on his 700 club, showing how the evil ACLU is once again attacking god and christians in the U.S. ... and don't forget about that activist judge that ruled on the case - he must be dealt with as well....

21. Yeah, here's a hate group for you:

Program features reflect the skills of Scouting, our national heritage, physical fitness, environmental conservation, and the true spirit of Scouting.

Daily activities include archery, bikathlon, buckskin games, confidence course, conservation programs, scuba, kayak fun, racing shell run, and raft encounters.

Regional action centers with rappelling towers are truly popular, as are trap shooting, an American Indian village, and the opening and closing arena shows, not to mention daily stage shows and many other activities. It's Scouting and American history at their very best!

23. Here's another hate group.

They were part of their national heritange, enjoyed physical fitness, conservation, hiking, shooting, archery, swimming, mountain climbing; scouting and Germany history at its, uh, best.

Funny thing is, that doesn't make up for the rampant bigotry.

25. You seem to think
that if a group does some good, it can do no wrong. That's incorrect.

The Boy Scouts want to discriminate against gays and atheists on the grounds that they're a private organization. Then, they want public money. The two don't jibe.

Let them stop their bigotry, and then they can get federal funding.

26. Well, they admitted as much in arguments to SCOTUS
"The Boy Scouts asserts that homosexual conduct is inconsistent with the values embodied in the Scout Oath and Law, particularly those represented by the terms “morally straight” and “clean,” and that the organization does not want to promote homosexual conduct as a legitimate form of behavior." 35. Can't remember the Hatred part, but I can remember the merit Bagdes
Yeah...

I'm trying to remember all the hatred I was taught in the BSA and for the life of me, I can't. I remember camping trips, merit badges, the odd weekend camp-out that my mom was "denmaster" of, and a whole lot of Star trek parties (yeah, well... we were 12 year old geeks), but I simply cannot remember when they told me hate, who to hate, how to hate and why to hate.

28. Perhaps so.
But consider this. Our Skipper was a serious boy scout enthusiast. He once ordered me to take an unruly herd of boy scouts swimming at an ocean beach known for dangerous currents. Yes I was a frogman. No I was not a lifeguard.

In addition he frequently would order one or the other of our officers to take them camping.

Totally unfair to us to be involved as baby sitters and to be burdened with such a terrible responsibility.

Yes I was a frogman. No I was not a lifeguard.

30. The Boy Scouts INSISTED to the SCOTUS that they were PRIVATE, not public
And therefore they should only be funded by private, not public monies.

Homosexual Americans should not have to underwrite their neanderthal discrimination.
